This feature is part of the standard phpbb installation, which means the the admins actually deactivated it. And even if it did work, you can still check an option in your profile to appear as a hidden user, which means that only the admins can see you as online.

According to the FAQ, I'm supposed to look for the magic carpet, but I can't find it anywhere. My contrast and brightness are both set to maximum, and I spent a good hour clicking all over the place. Can anyone help me?
