In the EGA version I always beat the fire elemental without incense. I'd just keep squirting him with my water canteen until he got into the alleyway, then shove him in the lamp. Haven't tried it in the VGA remake yet though, as I just got to the fire Elemental earlier (Stupid work, grumble).
