Re: New AGDI site goes live & King's Quest I Re-released!

The latest build of King's Quest I was compiled under AGS 3.1 (which Chris Jones uses Visual Studio to create). Microsoft have stopped supporting Windows ME and Windows 98 so the latest version of Visual Studio doesn't support these older Operating Systems, meaning AGS games compiled with AGS 3.1 w...

Re: New AGDI site goes live & King's Quest I Re-released!

Eriq, you've called the backgrounds in the KQ1VGA website "glorious SVGA...background art and animation" which isn't true. SVGA is 640x400 or higher and the graphics are still 320x200. Actually, SVGA is correct. VGA is 320x200 at 256-colours or 640x400 with 16 colours. SVGA is 640x400 or ...

Re: King's Quest 1 & 2 vga re-release?

I disagree. The number of times I've accidentally clicked the mouse button while watching a cutscene for the first time, and ended up then skipping the rest of it and losing a key plot point as a result, means that I think it's worth forcing people to watch them the first time through -- or at least...

Re: Q.F.G. II: eliminating letterbox resolution at 640x480

If your system does not support 640x400, the game will automatically switch into 640x480 and add the letterbox borders. Since you have a widescreen monitor, you can either: 1) select the "320x200" option and then employ the 3x filter to run at 960x600 2) select the "640x400" opti...

Re: Tragic Save Bugs

If that line were added, it would affect all operating systems. But then, putting save games in My Documents is not necessarily a bad thing on XP, some people will prefer it each way.

Re: Tragic Save Bugs

Yes, to get around this issue with Vista it is recommended that saved games are stored in the My Saved Games / My Documents folder. This is the default setting in AGS 3, but if AGDI wanted to make this change it is possible to put a Game.SetSaveGameDirectory call in game_start in 2.72 to redirect th...

Re: Installation/Vista UAC Administration Prompting

Because the game installs to your Program Files folder it requres admin rights, since non-admin users cannot write to this folder. Potentially the installer could be modified to install to My Documents or something and then wouldn't require admin privileges, but that would be very non-standard. Beca...

Exactly, there's a certain amount of reasonable effort that you go to with these things. Perhaps 30% of people playing the game would be clever enough to load the exe into notepad or a hex editor to read the text, so that's probably worth protecting against. However, I would guess that about 0.001% ...

Actually, in AGS the global messages and room messages are automatically encrypted, whereas strings used in the scripts are not. Thus, that april fools message could have been put in a global message to prevent it being so easy to see. But still, maybe I should modify AGS to encrypt all strings in t...

Sounds like a problem with the mouse wheel. If the game is getting signals that the wheel is being continually scrolled, the cursors will continually rotate around. It's worth making sure DX is up to date as NavyNuke says, and I guess you could try plugging the mouse in directly rather than via the ...

KQ2 is a Windows application. If you get a DOS box pop up with an error message in it, the likely cause is that the game has become corrupted in the download.

There was one version of AGS (2.4 I think it was) that added this to the context menu for EXE files. It annoyed everybody, so it was removed in the following version. However, I think that KQ1VGA v1.0 was compiled with this version of AGS, so if you ran that version of the game it will have installe...

Try disabling sound in the game setup and see if that helps. There have been a few cases in the past where the game wasn't realising that a sound effect had finished playing.

This is due to a bug in the AGS version that KQ1VGA was compiled with, where it allocates far more memory than it actually needs. The bug was then fixed before KQ2VGA was released, which is why that works without problems. So yes, KQ1 actually attempts to allocate in the region of 120 MB of RAM, but...

When the freeze happens, can you press Alt+X and tell us what the message says? Also, can I suggest turning sound/music ON and trying again. That means your monitor doesn't support the screen mode that the game is trying to use.

Run the game setup, and try toggling the "85 Hz" checkbox and the "Letterbox mode" checkbox, one combination of those should get it to work.

Make sure you've got the latest version of DirectX installed. KQ2 uses DirectX Media to play its videos, which wasn't included in older versions of DirectX.
