This might sound like a weird idea, but - if you want to keep Devon Aidendale as the hero, why not set QFG6 about 10-15 years after Dragon Fire and simply say that his wife's dead and he lost the kingdom? Then you eliminate all that irksome continuity right away and just get on with the story! I kno...
