Talking to the griffin also seems to increase intelligence quite a bit. I put something heavy on the enter key so I would talk to the griffin repeatedly and left the room for a bit. When I came back, my communication was 200 (from 118) and my intelligence was 172 (from 106).

Make sure you actually use the hand icon (and click on the inside of the wardrobe) and not the movement icon when you're trying to climb into the wardrobe, or else you won't.

As for experience points themselves, you don't use them, and they're generally not good for anything in this game (they would determine the frequency and difficulty of monster encounters in QFG1, but not in this game).
