The SPHINX Wiki: So you want to make an adventure game

Hey! Long time no see! I drop by for the first time in months, and I see that AGDI have released a promo video. Maybe we'll yet see QFG2VGA in our lifetimes, eh? Anyway, I'm here to tell you about something I've been working on for the last half year or so, and that I'm really excited about: http://...

Given that AGDI has an arrangement with Vivendi, is there a way you guys could intervene, try to get KQIX included under the same agreement?

Most of the stuff the designer journals are about is stuff you can see in the developers forum. (i.e graphical stuff and music) Those departments are pretty much rounded up, which makes coming up with new bits to write slightly harder. Then why not just say that? That all (or as good as all) conten...

I don't think there are any dead ends in The Dagger of Amon Ra. At least I never hit any.

Hey Ange! I'm mostly hanging out in the AGS Forums these days, though I lurk here some of the time. Let me be the far from first to offer you and Deb my congratulations on the baby. In my opinion, Angel at first suffered from dodgy production values (the vampire makeup, for instance), and some prett...

I just watched the episode "Hush" where the whole town have their ability to speak taken away. I loved it and now I want to read the original fairy tale. Help! Anyone know what it was? There's no original fairy tale. It was all made up by Joss Whedon. And there's not going to be an animat...

I do Java (and other) programming in my work, and I predict that the language will just continue to grow in popularity. For instance, Java is becoming the standard platform for cell phone development, which is a rapidly growing part of the industry. The good things about Java: 1) Easy to learn compa...

Hey (you knew this was coming...), why don't you and Rambaldi get together? Kill two birds (or one bird and one bloke) with one stone, so to speak.

I'm sure Ram is keen to move to West Virginia!

When I consider the possibility of playing a text adventure, I think I know how the average (American) cinemagoer feels when he's confronted with a foreign movie with subtitles.

It just ... sounds so challenging.

I hope some of you enjoyed the pics from New Orleans. If you did, there's a favor you can do one of the great locals I met there. I just got a new job. My first one, really. I'll be starting in a couple of weeks. I don't think it will suck. I'll be working for a big tech company, doing research and development type stuff. In pretty much every way it's my dream job. Cool tasks, good pay, nice co-workers. Now I know why I stayed...

With XP's compatibility settings, DOSBox, VDMSound, and fan-made patches, it's much easier to get most classic adventure games running today than it was five years ago. And in many cases they run more easily and better now than they ever did when they were published. Who remembers bootdisks with exp...

I do like LSL5 for the most part, but, if you actually look its puzzles, they never really amount to anything more than 'go here', 'pick up this', 'give this to this person' and require little to no thought. Well I can understand that because you want something more eatable stuff on your Pizza but ...

thanks, are you a placebo fan as well? They kick muchos buttos. They're pretty good. I listened to them a lot around the time when 'Cruel Intentions' was released (say what you will about the movie; the use of music over the title sequence was brilliant). PValiant, whether or not people like the backgrounds is a matter of taste. I think they're great, but of course you're free to feel otherwise, and the paintover you did (which was very nice, don't get me wrong) proves that you only want to help. I still think that a big reason why you don't like the...

Well snarky, in the end it is just a matter of taste. And personally i do not like the style of JLM5 too much. It really looks too unrealistic to me. I would like to see some references for the scandinavian colours though :) That said i admire JML5 is working on a game himself, keep up the work :) ...

Re: colour use

I like you're doing a project by yourself. But like said before, the art could use some improvement :) Besides the rather pixelated look, i also think you should watch out for your colours. Some of the green is too flashy and could use some work to look more real. I did a quick job on one of your b...
