About the cd reading problems, have you tried loading an ISO of the disc with a virtual drive, like DAEMONtools?

Only W7 Pro and up have XP-mode, so beware of that. Dosbox works like a charm, so all Dosbox games should give you no trouble (maybe KQ7).
