Playing old games

#1 Post by LordRahl » Mon Nov 13, 2006 5:47 pm

I just got my hands on some original Ultima games and Kings quest 4. My question is how can i play old DOS games on an XP computer? Can you do it at all?

Another option is (if you have got your old dos floppys around) microsoft virtual PC which can be downloaded for free from the microsoft site.

Yeah, all hail DOSBox.

If you have any trouble with the Ultima games (7, 8 and the Underworlds) when running in DOSBox, you might just need to alter the DOSBox.conf file (there's a shortcut in the Start menu when you install DOSBox). The section you'll want is at the bottom and has:

xms=true
ems=true
umb=true

You might need to change one of these to false (depending on the game, you have to change different ones, I think)

You can now buy the whole King's Quest Series for XP!!! My wife bought it for me for my 31st B-day. Ah the memories and the old school stuff on my new machine. :)

Click here to see where you can buy it.

Yeah, that comes with the DOSBox emulator as well. Not a good buy if you already have the games and have access to the internet, but if you need a collection they're right there!
