Bioware kinda fills the place in my heart that Sierra once did (or that old Sierra still does, I suppose). It seems to be the kind of developer that actually cares about its fans and creates the kind of games that I like. It doesn't hurt that it's based in my home province, either.

Anyway, of their games I'd say Jade Empire is perhaps the closest to QfG. It has plenty of humour, adventure, a good story and moments to remember. It is shorter than a lot of RPGs made these days, but it's still a 20-30 hour game.

All their games are fantastic, however (btw, as one poster mentioned KotOR 2, I should correct a misunderstanding: KotOR 1 was made by Bioware, but KotOR 2 was made by Obsidian, not Bioware).

I'll also second or third Placescape:Torment, just because I love that game. Don't play it if you're not really into reading, though.

A bit of diabolical advocacy coming up.

As far as I know (and the wikipedia article), it's not established in the DSM just yet...possible inclusion is being discussed, but it's not very well documented as of yet.

Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, of course, but to me, it sounds just like a subtype of one the other disorders, or maybe a combination of others (which means they do need a definition). A habit which impaires your social funtioning isn't automatically an 'addiction'. I mean, I could call it 'video game personality disorder' or 'video game hysteria', but those don't give the terms any more value. For example, read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorosis_%28medicine%29

Sure somebody in China died of playing WoW for three days, but who will ever know if she didn't have a personality disorder, or some other disorder? If somebody dies because she rows for three days, would I call it a rowing addiction or a sports addiction? Or if somebody dies from reading a book three days non-stop, will I call it a 'Words addiction' or 'Reading addiction'? Will very likely not happen, because those things have less negative connotations than 'video game' and 'internet'. It's just very attractive somehow to 'expose' those two as 'addictive', especially in media and academic environments. Newspapers as well as scientific journals need to be sold.

Well, there's my two cents of science. Until we know more, we can't really say much.

well, it depends. maybe if you have poor health and you just stop eating for a week so you can play WOW. I don't know if you have ever seen how they eat in china. anyways to say WoW is not addictive is just plain ignorant :/

Example: my brothers gf was complaining to his friends that he doesnt spend enough time with her. She suggested that he only play wow for 2 hours a day. All his friends laughed and said "you cant do anything in WOW in 2 hours. "it takes 2 hours just to walk to the place we are going. we need at least 4 hours." Now maybe thats okay if you are unemployed. But my brother gets home from work and plays wow for 4 hours and its time to go to bed.

Death may be a rare consequence of being addicted to video games. but i wouldn't deny that it was the cause. She is planning on leaving him if this doesnt stop. And if she leaves we might not be able to afford the rent anymore. It's all a chain reaction really. The sad thing is. my brother is 24, but i've met someone before in his 40s who is addicted to wow. Growing up requires management of priorities. Lack of judgement is usually assign that you are addicted :P

I understand where you are coming from with the "It could have been anything, even a book" suggestion. But let's be honest, how many people do you know would rather read a book than go out to dinner with their own brother, or girlfriend.

It's obvious he doesn't even have the attention span to realize im even there when he is on wow .

Also, he spends money to buy fake money on the game. And since all his friends do it i can't really conclude that it's just him.

He had me try the game, i was bored to tears in 15 minutes. maybe im immune? :P

All people with schizotypal personality disorder?

(BTW this is really interesting, but I have to go out now to be social with my friends now [lol])

well for sure my brother is not schizo :P
If u'd like i could look up the statistics, because im 100% positive that not every regular player of wow has a personality disorder.

Have fun :) I have to sit here and code webpages so my boss can get fatter and richer :P

if i were jerry springer this would be my final thought:

the internet is not a bad thing by itself, neither are video games. Both will lose their fun eventually. But massive online games are like orgies. anyone who has ever had more than one partner at the same time knows what you end up with in the end. something along the lines of Nobody.

Sports are healthy? (Little QFG2 humor there).

So what if someone spends 8 years making a game? Does that mean that they have a "game-making" addiction rather than a game playing addiction?

Sounds like you need to get your brother involved in World of Wifecraft instead: :D

You don't have to look up any such statistics for me, since I'm a psychologist. I can also tell you that no such reliable statistics are available to you, me or anyone.

You couldn't interpret that I was just naming ONE example, since you asked for it? I could also have said, 'a person with atypical dysomnia who just lost his mother'. Also 'Schizo' refers to somebody with schizophrenia, not somebody who is schizotypal or schizoid. Shows how little you know of psychological disorders.

never claimed to know about psychological disorders. In fact, i was saying the opposite. I don't think it has anything to do with psychological disorders. it doesn't take a PHD to know what WOW does to people. They simply don't want to grow up once they become addicted. It only takes common sense. I DID find statistics which i am sending to you in a PM :evil

edit:: actually, i just reread what you said. But Doc, I GOTTA ASK. if there are no reliable statistics how can I trust my shrink? lol

hows how little you know of psychological disorders.
by the way i'm a little hurt by this comment. As I had suffered with extreme OCD since 1986-2006, and I've been able to overcome it (somewhat). Unlike people who's grades, and overall life have suffered as a result of being obsessed with video games, mine suffered from an actual illness. And there is no pleasure of being immersed in some sort of fantasy land, in fact it's extremely painful to live with. In simple terms what i was proposing is that games like WOW are dangerous. I'm confident in saying that I know a little more than you think about obsession. Minus the technical jargon of course. Up until this point it was all laughs for me. Honestly, I'd expect a little more from a psychologist. Trying my best to be assertive here: I don't feel much like discussing this topic any further.

I'm sure you know a lot about your own obsession, but you can't really generalize that one to anyone or anything else, and that's just the way it is. People always overestimate the rate to which someone else's conditions is the same as their own. I didn't get the PM you were talking about. If you want to stop the discussion, we will do that right now. It's not my intention to hurt your feelings, I'm trying to be as objective and scientific as possible here. Thanks.

:p Being in the research field, I can tell ya that stats are extremely overrated (and usually well overcooked). :)

vampire: bloodlines is the closest game imo. lot of chatting, stealing, lock picking, magic, interacting and stuff, and also playing your class 'rules' is similar to how it felt in QFG playing your class. of course it's set in a world of vampire secret wars and horror though, so it may be to your taste or not.

Oblivion was horrible in my opinion. Great on the open-endedness side, horrible on the final execution of it as it was repetitive and boring after a while.

BGII is one of the best games ever made, however. I totally agree with that.

Okay. I'm entirely new to Quest for Glory with this remake, here, but it's reminded me of a bunch of things.

I never got the chance to finish VtM: Bloodlines (went away to college shortly after getting it; worked fine on family desktop computer; school laptop, however, not so much) but I totally agree. Game has some bugs though but there ARE fan patches that apparently fix a lot. It's pretty combat heavy, but it's mostly just FPS or 3rd person melee combat, and doesn't have a lot of stat wonkerier, and the game DEFINITELY encourages exploration and trying different things out.

Um... also going to second wizardry 8. It's not really all that much like Quest for Glory at all, but it's definitely one of the best PC RPGs that nobody ever played because of really, really stupid publishing.

And, as someone that really liked Morrowind, I didn't like Oblivion that much. Morrowind had its flaws (Two biggest for me: No NPC schedules and combat was... not good) but it provided a very well developed and detailed world, which is something that Daggerfall, predominately randomly generated*, and Oblivion, which DID have randomly generated* areas but wasn't predominately made that way, both lacked.

And it's QfG2's attention to detail that made it remind me, more than anything else, of Ultima 7. Ultima 6 and 7 were probably the first RPGs where the game worlds were really, really interactive virtual worlds (and I guess the notion of an interactive virtual world stems from Zork, really), but Ultima 7 took the concept and ran with it. It's also the most similar to Quest for Glory 2 as it's much, much more adventure-esque and less RPGish. Although you can actually do a lot of roleplaying stuff in it. I mean, like, stats don't matter that much.

(Other games that come to mind: Zelda: The Twilight Princess for it's very alive-ish world, exploration, and multiple solutions, and also Chrono Cross, for being somewhat open ended and one of square's most overtly puzzle-driven games

Oh, and Persona 3, because it's got a "certain events happen on different days" type thing like QfG2 has, wrapped around a a solid party-based roguelike thing).

* Not randomly generated at runtime. I meant that the dungeons and wilderness areas were randomly generated once, saved, and used as such.

For what it's worth, here are some (mostly) PC games I've enjoyed in addition to the QFG games...

- Dink Smallwood - http://www.rtsoft.com/dink/ - I'm frankly surprised it's not been mentioned on here yet... not so much RPG but a good short adventure with fun humor. Free download.

- Peasant's Quest - http://www.homestarrunner.com/disk4of12.html - Another short, but very funny, adventure game--pokes fun at the original Sierra games. Free play through web browser.

- Septerra Core - another good, but fairly typical, RPG.

Not quite RPGs, but fun plays:

- X-com series - good combo between war strategy and RPG (except lacks some RPG qualities that would make it one of the best games ever). RPG because your soldiers to increase in their abilities (although allowing customization would make it better) and you research new weapons, armor, etc.

- Heroes of Might and Magic series - mostly a turn-based war strategy game, but was enjoyable and had some building-up of the Hero (not sure how the newer ones are...)

Already mentioned:

- Star Control 2 (previously mentioned as The Ur-Quan Masters, http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) - It was a quite long space exploration game where you scavenge for minerals, sell them, and build up your spaceship (RPG-ish). It has some fun humor as well as you come across quirky alien races. It was fun to explore (what seemed like) a vast and unexplored space. Play only if you have some patience for exploring.

- Baldur's Gate - a decent RPG, not as good as some others already mentioned.

- Fallout - a solid RPG, one of the few that you can give your character some quirky traits.

- FF series (only mentioned here because it was brought up in an early post in this thread) - nice that each is unique; typical RPGs; VII is not overhyped--story is solid, it's the one that always come to mind when I think of the series.

- Oblivion - hated it. NPC seemed flat--no/little development; perhaps I just didn't have the time to invest to become immersed.

- WoW - recovering addict.

As for QFG 4.5, I couldn't find a good site to d/l it from, anybody have a link?

I've been looking and would really appreciate help finding QFG 4.5, too. I loved all the HOMM series (I've been playing since..the first one, wow)...I wish they'd let you directly control Heroes again (like in 4). But V had Dwarves which is always butt-kickingly awesome. Mm, games like quest for glory...that aren't quest for glory (or anything else fr Sierra/Lucas Arts)...I loved that QfG were adventure/rpg hybrids and your characters skills that you could increase and make him be more powerful. I don't well...I mean Deus Ex has that but it might seem too far afield what with being a stealth action fps, too...um..also tehre's anchronox which is def an adventure but your characters have an upgrade-able rpg element to them, too.
