I've been playing through the Great War Planes series with DosBox and a USB joystick, so yes it will work.  And Kloreep, it's nice to have another fan of TIE Fighter around - I'm currently replaying that one as well.

Back on topic, I've never had much enjoyment playing adventure games with a joystick/pad.  KQ5 and Maniac Mansion for the NES were nothing short of a chore to play with the old gamepad.

Even mouse only input is a pain at times in the QfG series.  I find my response time is much faster when I can use keyboard shortcuts or a combination of the mouse and keyboard.  So, keeping keyboard only for QfG2 combat is fine with me.

There was also KQ1 for the Sega Master System... huge, huge pain to try and play that.  Ugly graphics too.  Joysticks were made for flight simulators really.
