Rats Off To You, AGDI

It's said that pointing out one's own puns ruins the fun, but rodent you know it? I've a gnawing feeling I'll gopher it anyway.

Eh, that's the best I can do on short notice.  ;)

I've worshiped the old Sierra On-Line adventure games for longer than I care to remember, and I'd like to offer my thanks and gratitude for the fine work you folks are doing here. The King's Quest remakes are fantastic. The upcoming Trial by Fire remake is especially interesting to me, because that's the only Quest for Glory game I've never played. I do have DOSBox 0.72 and the Anthology (plus assorted original boxed sets), but since I've never played Trial by Fire before and am somewhat allergic to parsers, I think I'm going to wait for the remake.

Quest for Glory stands the test of time very well, I've found. Despite the flood of modern games over the past decade and change, none create quite the same feeling of adventure and excitement for me as the thought of good ol' Quest for Glory.

For those of you who've been developing remakes here since 2001-2003, you're saints. I've worked on a number of fan-made projects in my day, and after the initial enthusiasm wears off, the rest is all hard work.

But it's definitely worthwhile.

Is this a RABID member from the clan from SonicArmy.com?

It's R.A.B.I.D. as in "Rodents Against Boring Idiosyncratic Discrimination" and the Quest for Glory character Fenrus, Erasmus' rat familiar. Fenrus also happens to be a wizard, albeit a small one.

Yeah, I picked up the reference. :)

Nice avatar, btw.

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully, you won't have to wait long. It's a shame you skipped QFG2...it's a favourite among many of the fans, though if you dislike the parser, you're not gonna get very far into it. The game does take a while to pick up momentum.

It's always nice to see people acknowledging this. We used to get a lot of posters who mostly posted to hurry us up, having little understanding of the amount of work that goes into a game.

For me, playing QFG2 will be like playing a brand-new Quest for Glory game, just released; and the fact that many people think it's one of the best games is very encouraging. You can imagine my excitement.

While lurking on this forum, I've been surprised to hear which QFG games are people's favorites and why. I'm partial to QFG4 myself, though the bugs and issues it has on modern systems (which can take weeks to resolve, depending on hardware and luck) often dampen my enthusiasm for it lately.

Yeah, I find it rather appalling when people register and post all-caps threads demanding to know when the game will be done.

You've never tried playing QFG4 on DosBox with the fan-made patches? That pretty much gets you around every single showstopping error in there.

Well I'm not that die hard of a fan to catch on to that so excuuuuuse me.  LoL.

If any of you programming geniuses get a chance to troubleshoot how to get QFG4 to work through DOSBOX from the anthology disc it would be much appreciated.  Unfortunately I don't really know how to add in any of those patch things so i suppose that doesnt help.

Well, if I recall correctly, I did try that... but it was back when I had a less powerful computer, DOSBox was in an earlier version (it seems to have improved immensely over the last few years), and I may or may not have known about the fan patches at that time. I think I probably did know about the patches, since I believe they've been on that "A Hero's Quest for More Glory" site for a while, but I'm not sure.

I'll probably give it another go soon, and it may well work perfectly with minimal fuss and a glance at an FAQ. I know it's possible to get it running just fine, just need to get around to it.

Thank you! I made it with a scan of an old book and a calligraphy font.

I spend far too much time creating (or selecting) my avatar and signature in most forums I visit. It's a habit (hobby, even) that's developed over years of forum-going.

Oooh! Nice Avatar!

Mantle7, I could be wrong, but I think people mentioned in another thread that you have to copy the entire game to your HD before playing it on DosBox.
Like I said... could be wrong. I don't have the anthology.
Edit: Heh. Just saw that you've asked this question about 6 or 7 times. Perhaps try following these steps: viewtopic.php?t=11606&highlight=qfg4+dosbox

I got QfG4 working in DOSBox with minimal fuss, patch, voices and all.

That was easier than I expected. I found a guide online here, and it worked perfectly for me (with the Anthology CD).

Nice! Now we can post this link whenever anybody asks how to get it working! (It's quite the common question)

Excellent! I'm glad I found that little guide, and was frankly surprised at its existence. Google-fu has paid off again.

I wasn't sure if that particular guide had been linked to here before. I did a forum search, but only found people asking specific questions and receiving specific solutions (as opposed to a step-by-step guide).

I know it's a bit off-topic to post about it here, so I'll start a thread with the link in the appropriate section.

Actually, that's Fenris.

Actually, it's Fenrus.  While they weren't entirely consistent with the spelling, he's called Fenrus in the first two games, at least (the parser doesn't understand "Fenris").  So at the very least, the spelling "Fenrus" isn't wrong.

The games aren't consistent themselves as to the spelling. QFG1 and QFG2 use "Fenrus", QFG4 and QFG5 use "Fenris".

Indeed.

I did an exhaustive search online looking for the correct spelling at one point, and found that no source could identify a single "proper" version of the familiar's name. The games aren't any help either, as has been mentioned previously.

Except for one source, that is. I found an ancient Sierra BBS conversation in some old archive, from when the games were still in production... and in it, Lori Ann spelled his name "Fenrus".

So I'm going with Fenrus.  ;)

Well... I'm pretty sure Lori uses Fenrus, so I'd say that would be the official spelling.  :p

The proper spelling

I prefer Fenrus simply due to my knowledge of mythology.  Fenris is a shortening of Fenrisulfr, the great wolf of Norse mythology (more commonly known as Fenrir).

Like the Esper in Final Fantasy VI! it all makes sense to me now.
