Ok, Elsa.. so you are up for the Greek translation, and Stas.. you will do the Russian translation? I'll send you both a template translation file. And Fribbi too. Just keep all the special characters in there and hopefully, AGS will eventually be able to support them.

Stas, what is your email adress, so that I can send you the file?

Does anyone want to translate the German version? The other guys who were going to do it, haven't replied.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uanonymousgame ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 3/19/02 2:46:20 pm

I am theyr only fan from Iceland !

#29 Post by Fribbi » Wed Mar 20, 2002 3:03 am

That is right and I think I am the only Tierra fan from Iceland who knows so well about this website. I have being trying to let my friends in Iceland knows about this website and they think I am so crazy for what I have being doing here lately, for an examples my own paintings and those strips comics for Tierra and the musics I makes for them for lots of people here for nothing. I just do it for fun and from my hearts nothing else.

Hey, Happy Birthday Stas! Actually, it was from Australia to Russia, but I'm gald you liked the present anyway:)

Elsa: Yep, you can use any text editor... just make sure that it doesn't add any extra formatting to the file and also that it doesn't remove/replace any of your special characters when you save it as a text only file.

As for not making a direct translation, yeah I'll leave it totally up to you for how you want to do it. I can translate the game into Danish. The special characters of the Danish language are the letters æ, ø and å, but they can be written as ae, oe and aa (and sometimes are) without any loss of understanding.
My email adress is: toke@stud.ku.dk

By the way: (I don't know if it matters) but it seems to me, that the large carpet in the throne room of kq1vga and kqIIvga (www.qknowledge.net/royalq...shota.jpg) is sligthly asymmetrical. Or is it supposed to be that way?

Hi,
I'd really like to do the German translation if nobody else does it. The special characters are "ü", "ö", "ä" and "ß". Although they can be replaced with "ue", "oe", "ae" and "ss" it is not a very good style. Any comments? It would be great if you could send me the textfile with all lines of the game so that I can look over it.
If you need more information about me just ask ;-)
Because this is my first post in this forum I have to say this: Keep on with the absolutely great work you are doing! I love it!

Jan

Hi,
(and sorry for my third post in a row, but I think this could be interesting for other translators too.)
Thanks for your mail. I will start working on it today using the special characters. They can be replaced with "ae", "oe", "ue" and "ss" for the current version of AGS using the search&replace-command of a text editor.
But I have one question: Is there a maximum number of characters that can be used in one line? I ask this because German translations are usually a little bit longer than the English originals. Is there a problem with that?

Thanks again,
Jan

According to Chris Jones (creator of the AGS engine), having longer text than the original English line won't be a problem.

I don't know if Tierra should accept an official job at Sierra. That would induce drastic changes in Tierra's current ways.

I agree with Fribbi that there are quite some things we missed. Some of the messages seem like nonsense to me, though. (a line about giving the magic chest or shield to the troll, heh)

I'm a bit puzzled by the last line, though. Yeah, a few lines are still in there that didn't actually make it into the final game. Just translate them all anyway.

If you find the same things repeated twice or even three four or five times, make sure you translate them again. Every line must be translated in the file. And when you finish translating it, the text file must contain the same number of lines as it did in the beginning.

The death message goes here is just a standard 'template' line that I set up in the restore/restart/quit GUI box. Whenever you die, it changes "death message goes here" to another description, say, if you get killed by the ogre, it will change the text to "You were warned ogre and ogre again".

You can just leave the line beneath blank, or you can translate it. Since it's not *meant* to actually appear in the game (but sometimes does due to the wishing well bug) it doesn't matter how you do it.

As for Sierra, i'm not sure but I don't think we'd go with them, because it would limit our creativity too much, and probably place too many stipulations on us. Also, server space probably won't be an issue anymore. If they gave us the official "thumbs up" then that would be enough to satisfy us:)

Thanks for the answer AGD 2 and Erpy and now I am gonna ask another question about this translation I saw there is some text that you missed out like in front of the castle for an example, is it because you would not need it anymore in the game or will they not appear in the new version.

Another question If it happens someday that you will like to join Sierra what will be the new name for your teams will it be called
"Sierra fans games entertainment or
Sierra/Tierra Entertainment ,with new and unforgettable old games ??

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ufribbi.showPu ... >Fribbi at: 3/22/02 5:38:51 pm

My guess is that since the template files are pretty much a litteral text dump of the game's contents, any missing lines are simply not in the game.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashc ...

....like Fribbi said, it was a massive amount of work even though I already had a lot of lines translated. But the effort paid off. Thanks Erpy. I got your emai with the filel. The translation appears to work, although there are some lines in the game that remain English, even though you did translated them. I can't see any apparant reason for this, so I assume it's a bug. I've emailed Chris Jones about it. And once I get it working 100%, I'll try and compile a beta version of KQ1VGA 3.0 for you to test it out with.

How work the translation???

#46 Post by FullJee » Sat Mar 23, 2002 12:53 pm

does the games read the right sentense directly on the text file during the game of it's a other method??? because if it read directly the text file it's will be more simple to remplace the english sentense by the translated one to fix this bug. Or the other way and the more tough for the server method will be: Do a different games for all language so 25 mb for the english + 25 mb for the spanish and... I hope you will fix this bug.

I think when the game is running, it looks to the translation file whenever it encounters a line of English. When it finds the matching English text in the translation file, it looks beneath that line and replaces the English text with whatever is written below it. If nothing is written below the English, then it will just display the normal English text.

When the translators send their text files to me, I compile it into a .tra file, which users place into their KQVGA game directory. The translation files are only about 230kb (give or take), so they sure do beat having a 25MB version of each game available.

Also, if there are typing errors or mistakes in the translated versions, this way it will be very easy to fix them up.

Hmmm...and you are sure that the English text in the translation file matches the exact text the game is looking for?

The first line of the well-screen seems to be something like "you look in." When you actually get to test the game with your translation in place, you'll be able to see if the context of your translation is right or wrong for certain. There might still be a few spelling/grammatical errors in the English lines, as you pointed out (ie. not starting with captial letters etc). In any case, it's important not to correct any errors in the English text, because I'm pretty certain that the translator looks for the exact English text (case sensitive) and if it doesn't find it, it will display the original English text instead.

As for the "you look in" message in the well screen, the context of that is when Graham walks over to the well and looks down it.. so the game is basically saying, "you look down the well."

I think the other bug is nearlly ironed out now too, with the English messages appearing when they weren't meant to.
