A progress page

#101 Post by FullJee » Sat Apr 13, 2002 12:10 am

It will be cool to have a progress page so every week we come here to tell to the fan where we are in our thanslation. Me, I am at 31% in the translation file and 0% for the manual.

I have no problems with it if you create a progress-page in this forum so people can see how you're doing, but keep a few things in mind:

1) The actual translations won't come out until AGS supports TrueType fonts, so it doesn't matter that much how fast progress goes, as long as progress is made.

2) It's not a race. If all translators were to post in a progress-thread every week, they might start rushing things because it's nice if you're able to tell you finished first. The last thing we would want is if people aren't able to have a life (or start rushing the translation which could result in quality loss) because all their time is spent on translating the script.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

I have one question about the manual about the install instruction. I know The manual is somehow a copy from the original manual from Sierra and Tierra remade this game only for the Internet but not Cd-ROM disc. In the instruction how to install the game it is said I should put the cd-ROM disc of kq1 VGA but there has not yet being a KQ1 VGA installed on CD-ROM ...yet. Should I change that line and put link to Tierra where people could install it from or just translate it as it is says now ?, thanks.

I almost forgot to thank you, for your help, Erpy and Flauschepelz. So: Thanks! And sorry about the "fill"-question, I was confused because I played the EGA versions of KQ1 und KQ2 the days before. As a gift, I have some more question <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> :

Line 412: The trees here are stunted and twisted. They give you the heebie-jeebies.
What does "heebie-jeebies" mean?

Line 1122: King Edward the Benevolent, aged ruler of Daventry, has summoned you to the castle for reasons unknown.
Does "aged" mean that he has been the ruler for a long time or does it mean that he is very old (and probably has to die soon), as I assume. I know it's a pretty small difference but it's in the intro and especially there I really try to keep the spirit of the original sentences even more than in the others.

By the way: Lines 1120 and 1122 don't have a "&1" or "&2" in front of it, although there is speech in the game. Is this correct?

Line 1279: You've found a bush, but there isn't a quail in the game.
Can you explain this, please. Maybe I am silly, but my dictionary says a "quail" is a special bird. But what does it have to do with a bush?

Thanks for your help.
Das Jan

---
www.dasjan.de | www.adventure-treff.de

I could not find the translated word too for heebie-jeebies but I suddenly remember that word was used in the movie
"Big daddy" with Adam Sandler. But I forgot what the translated word of that was. I think it is something about getting terrified with something.

Getting the heebie-jeebies means getting the creeps.

Aged means "old" in this context.

I didn't get the line about the quail and the bush either. (at least, not at first) This is a typical example of a pun that cannot be translated. The only option is using your creative imagination to think up a pun or funny line yourself.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashg ...

Latin translation question

#112 Post by mrfx2211 » Tue Apr 16, 2002 5:01 pm

I've got weary of thinking about a line that appears directly at the beginning of the translation file:
"He obviously invested in the same gray-suit line."
I hope I don't offend anyone by asking the ridiculous question: What's the joke about this sentence?
As to the bush-quail line, the only thing that came to my mind was: Fruticem invenit frutex. (frutex figuratively means "fool" or so). I hope this is funny enough.
Thanks
mrfx22

"He obviously invested in the same gray-suit line." this is a left-over line from the AGS demo game. Just ignore it by leaving the line beneath it blank.

If you can't think of an alternative for the bush/quail line, just use a generic line i.e You see a large bush nearby.

Am I a Beta tester too ?

#117 Post by Fribbi » Fri Apr 19, 2002 11:13 pm

I have a question about the KQ1 VGA game version and manual. Since I´m one the translators and will be willing to beta test the game to try it out before it will be released, ( and btw I´m still waiting to test it out now), will my name with many others translators from this world appear in the credits in both manual and the game itself in a translators rank and Beta testers rank.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ufribbi.showPu ... >Fribbi at: 4/19/02 6:14:38 pm

As I intend to have a manual for each separate version, each different manual will only have the name of the translator who translated the game into that particular language. I don't see any reason why we should include all the translators in all the different manuals.

Since Icelandic is a language with quite a few non-standard characters, you'll likely have to wait until AGS supports truetype fonts, Fribbi. If you'd test out the game with your translation now, it would likely crash as soon as you got the first message on the screen. Please have some more patience for now.

The game itself would need to be reprogrammed a little bit if we wanted to include translators in the credits, so I think it would be easier if you'd just squeeze your name in the info section that can be viewed by clicking on the question mark in the in-game option menu. Besides, if we wanted a full list of translators in the credits, we'd have to wait with the release of version 3.0 until the last translation was finished and I don't think that would be a good idea.

I don't think we'll add to the beta testers list. I've been testing version 3.0 for a while and all I have found were a few glitches (cosmetic stuff), but no fatal errors, random crashes or bugs that made the game impossible to finish. I don't think the game needs much more beta testing. (beta testing might not even be the correct word, as beta testing always occurs BEFORE the actual release of a product)

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

If you want your own name to appear in the credits, just put it under this line in the translation file:

Original Game by: Sierra On-line

As for version3.0, it's coming. We're just making sure it's bug free before we start sending it out to any translators. We want the focus to be on finding translation errors/bugs, rather than other bugs related to the game itself. We've been working flat-out on KQ1VGA version3.0, which has unfortunatley pushed the release of KQ2VGA back about a month or so.

But hopefully, once KQ1VGA3.0 is released, it will be the final version ever, and we'll be able to divert our full attention back to KQ2 again.

Thank you for the offer, Bert. But I have already done a translation of the game in dutch. Still, since you are interested in this sort of thing, would you mind if I sent you my translated script one of these days? I'm curious what another dutchman would think of it and I'm open for constructive criticism.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...
