Translators: Please Read

#1 Post by Anonymous Game Creator 2 » Sat Mar 16, 2002 9:52 pm

Could everyone who volunteered to translate the game into a different language please make a post in this thread and state which language you were going to be translating the game to in your post.

Note: AGS can not currently support any special symbols for different laguages (such as ä and ç). So please, can you also state in your post if it's possible to FULLY translate the game without the use of any language specific symbols in your language. Thanks!

My dutch translation is mostly without special characters except for a few é's. (20 or so) This isn't really a large number in a document which consists of 128.066 characters. Omitting the special characters are accepted spelling if it is known that special characters cannot be used at that time. I intend to put a remark about that in the readme-file. I've also been checking my translation to see if there were any words with special characters that could be rephrased.

I likely have to update my existent translation a bit because I missed some easter eggs. (I've never been able to get the Larry easter egg)

I don't expect to make changes to my edited manual. I believe there's still a word walkthrough above the picture of the rat, but I doubt it's worth re-editing the entire page for.

I do not know any other languages where special characters like the ü, á or è aren't common, though. French, german and spanish certainly are, and so is icelandic if I'm not mistaken.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashn ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 3/17/02 2:30:48 pm

What's going to happen, is that we'll release a "template" text file that contains all the English text in the game - every line of it.

Each English line has a blank space below it, for you type the translated version of that line. Once you've translated the entire file, you'd just send it back to us, and we'd reinsert it into the AGS engine and compile the language pack.

The problem is, currently if any non-standard characters are used, the game will crash, so I that's why I need to know if special characters can be replaced or omitted.

Still waiting to hear from Fribbi, and the person who wanted to translate it to French. I've contacted the German tranlator and Spanish translators. Was there anyone else who was translating the game to another language?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uanonymousgame ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 3/17/02 4:51:57 am

A very long time back, someone offered to translate it into Russian...although,all my emails erased themselves at one point. Perhaps I still have his address in the sent mails box...

But, Leandro Tami had the Spanish translation covered.

Anonymous Game Developer #1

Russian translator

#5 Post by Stas » Sun Mar 17, 2002 11:56 am

I know Russian and English good, because I live in Russia. But I can't translate, because I don't have the game. If I download it, and then if I install it, I can translete it on Russia.

You don't need the game itself, we will send all translators a text file, which they will translate and send back to us.

For a Russian translation, would you need to use any special characters, or can you do the full translation using standard English characters?

I believe that unfortunately the Russian language has quite a few non-standard characters.

Also, Stas, the download link is down right now, but justadventure should be able to get their server running again in time.

I know that in theory you don't need the game to do the translation, but in reality this would be really hard. In certain cases, you'll need to rephrase sentences to make them sound better (litteral translations often sound horrible) and if you don't know what an object looks like, you'll find it very hard to adjust your description of that object.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 3/17/02 2:41:24 pm

I've already downloaded it and I'm working on it right now.

I have a question. What am I supposed to do with the line about "Just wait until Royal Quest is finished." Spanish Translation

#11 Post by Leandro Tami » Mon Mar 18, 2002 3:34 am

I think that a Spanish Translation can be available without using any special characters. I'm still interested in doing it, as many others guys I know. Just send me the text file, and we'll start working at it.

ps. I'm truly glad that the non-english versions are going to be officially supported!.

Erpy: You can either translate it, or just leave the line beneath it blank. Either way, it doesn't matter because that line doesn't appear in the game at any point.

Leandro: Ok, I'll send you the template translation file. Check your email soon!

Objects

#13 Post by Stas » Mon Mar 18, 2002 12:53 pm

My friend said me, that in KQ1VGA you remaked the SCI0 version of the game, I saw objects in that game (and in Original too), and I think I can describe objects. I think Russian has many non-standard English characters, and some of them looking as English characters. I'll write the special Russian characters: é, ö, ã, ø, ù, ç, ú, ô, û, ï, ë, ä, ÿ,÷, è, á, þ (many, huh?)

I forgot another special character on Russian language.

#18 Post by Stas » Mon Mar 18, 2002 11:58 pm

I forgot another special character on Russian language, it's ü. I've just downladed the game (KQ1VGA), but version 1.0. And I numbered 50 points (when in Russia is day, in USA night, and I then played). So I know how to describe objects, and I know how they looking. So I now can translate it (I think).

Hmmm, the current problem is that AGS does not support any language exclusive fonts.. only standard the English ones.

I could send out the file for you guys to start translating, but it wouldn't work in the game until AGS is able to support true-type fonts.

I noticed Fulljee said he could translate the game into french, he unforutanly posted it in the wrong topic <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> , but you might want to contact him anyway.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mahatma Gandhi

That means that other languages characters AGS will not read. Maybe send a message to Chris Jones for an update or patch for AGS. By the way my e-mail is: farlander@rambler.ru . But I don't think now, that russian translation will be.
