Tale of Two Kingdoms released

#1 Post by Erpy » Mon Jul 16, 2007 9:12 am

I noticed on the AGS forums today that the game "A Tale of Two Kingdoms" has been released. (I believe the website is http://www.taleoftwokingdoms.com/ )

The game was created by several people who are or used to be regulars around here such as Radiant, KQ Artist and Meerbat. Congratulations on the release of the game, guys. :)

This game has amazing production values for an amateur game.  Kudos to the designers, if they read this.  On the other hand, this game is in desperate need of a walkthrough...or at least someplace online to get hints.  The AGS hints & tips forum has descended into a barrage of questions with no one giving answers.  Perhaps this game is just a smidge too open-ended for its own good.  But oh is it beautiful. :)

Ah, yes. I remember Radiant's announcement of this (and the impressive demo they released). Strange he didn't let us know it was finished (nice catch, Erpy). I've only just started the game, but it's great so far.

Thank you Erpy! You beat me to it. I'll just add the official blurb and some screenshots, for people who haven't been here that long. I hadn't forgotten this forum, I just needed to find my old password note :)

A Tale of Two Kingdoms is an epic faerie tale, in the classic style of the famous Sierra and LucasArts graphical adventure games. It is a full-length game with an atmosphere of fairy tales, magic, and intrigue.

Featuring five different endings; several sidequests and alternate solutions; teamwork with non-player characters; 75 minutes of high quality music; and director's commentary.

The ancient kingdom of Theylinn is beset by enemies both from within and without. Within the castle walls, nobles vie for the old King's favor, and not everybody is happy with the sole heir to the throne, princess Rhiannon.

Meanwhile, danger approaches, in the form of an invading army, a hostile giant, and a mercenary troop who are ancient enemies of the Theylann king.

And there is mystery yet. For hidden within the borders of Theylinn lies a second kingdom, named Thierna na Oge, where the faeries reign. Little is known about this shrouded, exotic realm.

There isn't a speech pack, and I doubt there will be.

From the FAQ
We originally intended a speech pack, but we had trouble getting the necessary voices. Most people who auditioned were teens or students, and several of the characters in the game are middle aged, or even ageless faeries.

I downloaded it and started playing.  I've managed to escape the start and am now in the forest.  It really is a beautiful game so far.  I wonder, though: are there any dead-end situations (aside from the timed scenes)?  I don't want to experiment too much if it turns out that doing so will put the game in an unwinnable state.

There aren't any walking dead situations as far as we know; the game is very non-linear and there are often more than one solution to many puzzles.

The game is great so far! Thanks for mentioning me in the credits, but the nature of this game makes me wish I contributed more to the sprite work. Either way though the art is absolutely fantastic and I'll be writing a review for AE once I've finished it.

This is really awesome! I remember when the game creators contacted me because I ran a website and wanted publicity, or music, or something, I forget :)

But I'm really glad it got made, looks really good.

Does anyone else see the KQ6 opening beach in this shot? :)

Version 1.1 is now available, fixing many reported bugs, particularly crashes.

Download here

Alistair - nope :b. I did that background from scratch and didn't reference KQ material at all, so any apparent similarities must be by coincidence.

I beat it a couple of days ago. An excellent game, and congratulations on finishing it! Now I'll have to go replay and try to find everything I missed; I only got 70% Wisdom and 42(?)% Honor.  :rollin
