I'd usually use something like notepad. But it depends on what you want. There's some editors out there specifically for HTML code (I use HAP Edit myself), but there's also the kind of software that's kinda like Word where you see everything that the code is doing instead of the raw code. Microsoft Frontpage does that but I don't know of any free ones, though I'm sure they exist.

I wouldn't mind helping as it would give me practice. I took a class in html as an elective in which we made basic but nice looking web pages. I'm actually going to take the advanced class in html, but that doesn't help you now. The design was on with a header, body, and menus on the left. I know very little CSS. Very little. Let me know.

perhaps you can search the web for free templates? There are quite a few around the place. HTML isn't hard to learn either, especially if your just gonna learn enough so you can edit the templates. I learnt HTML from www.w3schools.com .
And extremely hard for a novice to get used to and use. It's a professional site editor, I really don't think it's what would be best for him.Gronagor wrote:Dreamweaver is obviously the best choice. But it is far from free.

Hmmm... I don't know. If one keep to the simple things in Dreamweaver (which works very much like word if you simply play with the text, simple images and tables in the Design View) it should be easy for novices.
But AMG, most hosting-packages nowadays include simple website-wizards. They're usually very easy to use.

I do a bit of website scripting/design myself. I would recommend giving a more in depth description. Here are some questions I would ask...
You mentioned a banner, do you already have a banner made that you want to use?
How do you want the Navigation bars to look? Do you want them to stretch all the way across the screen, have a background, if so what color. You listed two colors for links what color did you want the navigation bars to use for links?
The line strokes through the background would be something you would more likely do with a picture. Do you know of a background you could show to give an example of what you want?

I wouldn't mind helping you make a shell for your website but I am really more of a coding person so you would probably need to find someone else to do the banner/background image.
One thing to keep in mind if you do pink/blue in your background image than the user may have trouble reading the links if you do them in the same color.

Well it is really not much to look at but I threw together a quick "shell" of a website. Really all it includes is the navigation bar setup but thats about all you really described, I used your sig pic as a placeholder for a future banner. Most of the stuff needs to be tuned up and customized to fit what your looking for but I figured it was a start.

If you have any questions about anything I did on the site let me know, I tried to make it as simple as possible in case you want to change anything.

What is your website going to feature and be mostly about? Because as far as I'm aware if you're going to be talking about someone and making updating people about it, why don't you just sign up to WordPress and start a blog? It's hosted there and it's completely free! You can add custom pages, choose your themes and you're able to change certain aspects of the theme.

There isn't any point starting a website when you can easily just setup a blog because you're able to add custom pages but most of the time you're probably going to post something on the front of the page and it has more chance of getting seen. Blogs are better than fan websites so I would strongly recommend starting a blog than a website.
It doesn't take too much time getting used to but you'll eventually get the hang of it.
And it has a built in spell checker too!

Well the colors are probably way off but I threw together a quick example of what I "think" you want. The demo is up at http://itsjm.com/subdomains/asianmusicguy/
I am trying to keep the code relatively simple but most of the stuff you wanted requires a decent amount of CSS stylesheets to accomplish. Anyways let me know if you have any questions/comments.
