Some time ago I came cross a website for fans of the Age of Empires series (http://aok.heavengames.com/). It has links to many fan made scenarios, and mod packs for AoEII to alter the appearance of the game.
Most remarkable though is the ingenuity that fans have shown in programming their own scenarios and campaigns, often turning a strategy engine into a pretty functional rpg engine.
I've always wondered about attempting a remake of some sort in this wise, although it is beyond my skill. Still it's fun to play with if you are a fan of AoE
