The third QfG game is called "Wages of War".
I've always wondered what the word "wages" means in this context.

• Does it mean "money received for work"?
• Is it a made-up noun based on the expression "to wage war"?
• Maybe both?

Please help me, I'm not a native speaker of English.

I've not played that particular QFG game but being a native english speaker I personally would assume its meant as in to wage war.

Not being a native english speaker, but having played the game, I'm almost sure wages has the sense of "gain gotten for work" here. It probably is a clever pun.

Makes sense to be a pun for both since the very core of Quest For Glory is receiving a reward for so much work you put into it.

Wages (Recompense) of War would mean that the hero was trying to make money from war. But during the game he's trying to stop war, not create it. If anything, it would be Payments of Peace. I think the meaning is direct, like the other subtitles in the series (though the first one was meant to be funny, I think).

No. Wages of War means there is SOMEONE trying to reap benefits from war, and though spoilerish, that's exactly what the evil dudes in that installment are doing.

There's also the phrase "to wage war." In that case, it means "to carry on." However, if you think of "Wages of War" being objectless (which it kind of is due to the preposition), it means "to contend or struggle," though that's a relatively obsolete definition. 'Struggles of War' certainly makes sense.

DrJones's thinking is the most likely meaning though. Fatalities in battle have been referred to as "the wages of war" before.

"The Wages of War" means the COST of war - the intangible costs that war inflicts on people. It refers to the price of war on people, places and cultures.

I think Wages could be seen as a combo between 'wage' and 'wages'. Wages to me isn't actually receiving something, but giving, or cost. The 'Cost of War' in other words.

Argh heck. Whatever. It's a cool name. Just like 'Trial by Fire' and 'Shadows of Darkness'.

Wow. I didn't even think about that before. The hero's name is So! That's why the first game asks if he wants to be a hero.

I always found a question for a subtitle out of the ordinary.

Not often, but you gotta wonder, did QfG1 have anything to do with the naming of a TV series like "So, you think you can dance?" etc.
