Go get it now if you don't own it! This isn't a temporary deal. It is a temporary offer, but once you buy it (for free) you own it. Even after the due date (May 24th) is passed. Go and get it now even if you're computer can't play it! Someday maybe you'll get a good enough computer so you can play it and you'll thank your lucky stars that you managed to take advantage of this incredible deal while it was free!

Those of you who don't know what Portal is....you're beyond help.

EDIT: Official Linux port announcement.

I got it some hours ago, but I don't have the 5 Gb of free space required for the installation. I hope I don't need to actually play the game in order to keep it.

No, it just links it to your Steam account. That's the way everything else works, anyway.

More big news! Steam has finally been ported to Linux! There are already a few already Linux-ported games supported such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and a few id Software titles. The first Valve games to launch on Linux will be HL2, Counter-Strike Source, and Team Fortress 2.

Now, if only they'd start accepting more indie AGS games than "Time Gentlemen. Please/Ben There, Dan That". :p

one of the top sellers on steam right now is the "indie pack" of about 6 titles that I've never heard of but look really interesting. Higher still is the bundle for Tales of Monkey Island and Sam and Max Season 3 which is cheaper than getting a season of either and if you have Team Fortress 2 (now or in the future) you can wear Sam's hat on any character. Still I prefer to get my games at Tell Tale as they like to do a lot of bonuses/promotions/Mac ports after sale.

What about this? Says it's free, too.

Already tried submitting it to them, but they wouldn't take it. They also won't give criteria or feedback about the games they do accept. Evidently, their acceptance criteria isn't based on a game's metacritic score and it can't possibly be based on it's quality or enjoyment factor either because they have some real stinkers on there, with metacritic scores much lower than ours.

The bandwidth is nothing to them, so I suspect getting games on Steam is all about who you know and what they can do for you. Either that, or they have some twisted sense of maintaining (what they perceive as) quality assurance.

The free Portal offer is officially over. My congratulations to those who took advantage of the deal and my sympathies for those who didn't. Better luck next time.

I got it last week. Thanks for letting us know! :)

Frankly, I didn't know about Portal. Now that I've tried it (and finished it), I love the concept, it's quite challenging, although I found the game surprisingly short. But hey, it was free, you can't beat that! :D

It's not a full length game. It was initially released with The Orange Box as a bundle along with Team Fortress 2 (multiplayer), Half-Life Episode 2 (fairly large size game, not a full sized, but bigger than Portal), Episode 1, and the original Half-Life 2 (huge game). You can buy it on its own at retail now for like 15 bucks. When Portal 2 comes out soon it's supposed to be a larger game, though.

Portal and I are no longer friends. I unlocked all or most of the achievements on two other X-boxes and none on my own, and honestly I don't feel like doing it again.
We shall be friends again once a sequel hits, or I long for portal based hilarity and puzzles.

A sequel may be sooner than you think.

I believe PC Gamer has it scheduled for Q3/Q4 2010 (!)...
