Can you connect a laptop to laptop via male to male vga cable? Say i have 2 laptops and on one laptop the screen is black but i can hear the drives/fans spinning, can i connect this dead screen laptop to a good laptop via male-to-male vga (or DVI) cable to see if if it's just the screen that the problem is with?

My first hunch is no, since those VGA ports supply output, rather than input. But I'm not 100%. You'd be better off using an external monitor.
