I currently have all the adventure games I could ever want to play on my Windows XP partition. They all work fine, most have launchers and don't require cds. Now because I did this years ago my Windows OS is a bit buggy with some things and needs a fresh install, I figure now that Vista is over I might want to jump up to Windows 7 but the thing is I don't know much about it, particularly how it handles retro games. Has anyone had issues on getting any of the following to work on 7?

Quest for Glory 5
Space Quest/King's Quest/Police Quest collections for XP
Gabriel Knight
Gabriel Knight 2

The rest can be handeled through Scummvm or Dosbox front ends but these are the ones that worry me as they were typically the hardest to run, particularly Dragon Fire.

PQ, SQ, KQ, and GK all run fine under DOSBox. No problems. If you have it set up properly. Same with the DOS version of GK2, if you have that. Make sure you get all the patches and installers from Seirra Help Pages. They really are invaluable to play these games on modern computers and basically mandatory. I don't know about Dragon Fire. Probably just run the WinNT patch or whatever and play it under Windows XP compatibility mode (shortcut properties).

I have the 6 disk version of beast within and used the compiler from gk2000, I used their installer to get the cd version of Sins to work as well, Dragon Fire was a real hassle to work because of the quick time drivers it needed. I also could only run it in 98 compatibility mode not Nt/ME I'm more worried about the more recent ones in the quest lines since I know the early ones all work great in Dosbox but the last ones like KQVII, SQ6 and PQ4 were all a little tricky, I don't think I've actually gotten Princeless Bride to work but I never liked it much anyways.

The Dos version of SQ6 works fine in dosbox--you may need to turn up the CPU cycles a bit to get it going smoothly though (at least I did on my older Windows machine.) KQ7 does work in Dosbox, but you have to patch it (available at the Sierra Help Pages) to turn it from the Windows version into the Dos version 2.0. You have to replace the .avi movie files with DOS compatible ones (also available at Sierra Help Pages.) Once you do that it should run just fine though.

PQ4 also has a DOS version.

Only W7 Pro and up have XP-mode, so beware of that.

Dosbox works like a charm, so all Dosbox games should give you no trouble (maybe KQ7). I don't use the SierraHelp installers because I can't get my MIDI modules to work with them. Qfg5 can give you trouble, depending on whether you can install the original Quicktime 3.0 (which will require XP-mode), or maybe 4.0; myself, I run it in Virtual Machine with XP installed into that.

GK2 I haven't tried yet.

I recently installed QFG5 on my Win 7 Machine, and it seems to work perfectly fine. I have a 64 bit version (of Win7), and just patched it with the 64 bit patch on the Sierra Help Pages. I don't even need to run it in any compatibility mode either (though without the 64 bit patch, I had to run it in win 98 compatibility to get it to work). The intro loads fine with the most recent version of quicktime (version 7.6.7) installed, but as I have not completed a round of the game on this machine yet, I do not know if the issue with the game hanging on the near-end movie still exists or not.

If it doesn't hang up on the intro cinematic it won't hang on the dragons cinematic

I figured it probably wouldn't, but I didn't want to confirm anything without being 100% sure myself.

And I'm doing fine these days. Growing slowly more mentally stable (crap was I a bit messed up. I seriously refuse to look at anything I posted online for a few years span because I'm ashamed of myself), and I finally moved out of my parents place and living on my own. My brother got married, and has a twin son and daughter. I became an overnight supervisor at work, and have had a few changes of heart here and there. I think that about covers the major changes in my life.

Update. I finally finished Quest For Glory IV for the first time, Wow was it good. Problem is when I import into Quest For Glory Five it tells me the file doesn't work

is what my character looks like. I tried removing all the "f"s and that didn't work either. For comparison the same character in Quest For Glory 3 looked like this

I know a lot of you guys have played with editing your save files, anyone see an issue in these?

Have you patched QfG5? There are some well-documented import problems between version 1.0 and QfG4.

I haven't patched because I was able to get the game to run just fine by playing in 98 mode. Are the patches just general tweaks or are they intended as fixes?

Also Dragon Fire has that MoE loading from disk as fast as it can type gameplay. I know my computer can run it fine but it'll lock up at times while waiting to read from the CD. Is there a known way to get that information retrieved directly from the hard drive? it would speed the game up drastically.

The1.2 update for Dragonfire you'll need! It fixes serveral problems, among which importing problems. Without it, you'll never be able to marry Katrina...

About the cd reading problems, have you tried loading an ISO of the disc with a virtual drive, like DAEMONtools?

I haven't got the time to read more carefully this link, but it looks like it would serve to play Quest for Glory V (and other games that use Direct Draw 5) in Windows 7. Basically, a person has reimplemented all methods used by Direct Draw making use of OpenGL so that you can play those games again.

You won't even need it because of the XP patch.
The major problems that are left arise from playing the Quicktime videos ingame.
