National Endowment for the Arts issuing game grants

#1 Post by Shieldage » Tue May 31, 2011 5:25 pm

The Escapist: News: Games Now Legally Considered an Art Form (in the USA)
FY 2012 Arts in Media Guidelines
The Arts in Media Applications

To summarize:

The US Federal Government, via the National Endowment for the Arts, has recognized games as an art form. For projects the NEA considers fit to "enhance the public good" they'll be willing to issue grants up to 200K.

Their updated mission statement: "Projects may include high profile multi-part or single television and radio programs (documentaries and dramatic narratives); media created for theatrical release; performance programs; artistic segments for use within an existing series; multi-part webisodes; installations; and interactive games. Short films, five minutes and under, will be considered in packages of three or more."

Lots of red tape are sure to be involved in any application process.

As people who've been making excellent non-profit games for years, thank you by the way, I guess this means good news for your colleagues? While this likely isn't applicable for the old Sierra properties, it could be channeled into Adventure Game Studio projects and, possibly, be used by people remaking less tightly held properties to purchase the rights for the original games...
