I guess if your imaginary power is strong it can still be scary. Earlier I stated that you don't feel like Gabe himself and all, but actually it's much more easy to imagine I'm Gabriel and Grace cause it's all so vivid and real, and in this time etc.

OK, so I'm back from The Big Easy. It was a good time, definitely, and I thought I'd show you all some pictures of the real locations out of GK. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

This is a street in the French Quarter, where most of the action in the game is set.

Jackson Square, with the St. Louis Cathedral in the background. It's interesting to see the real places compared to the game screenshots. Thanks for those! Very interesting. Must have been an experience!

I've got a trip planned with friends this summer. We shook on it just the other day, so it's still in the sketchy stages, but it'll happen. It'll probably be around either late June or early July, depending on when we get it set up. It ought to be tons-o-fun.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.howtobeahero.com/images/type ...
Be a Hero.

I'm told the city gets swelteringly hot in June-July (well, May-September, actually). Hope you can take it!

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Someone who uses "GK" and "overrated" in the same sentence?? KINDRED SPIRIT!

I might as well do my part in the balancing act by saying that Mr. Knight is one of the more unsavory characters I've ever moved around; I can't think of any I have disliked more than him at the moment.

And I could go into a rant on how he's blackened the good name of accidental supernatural tourists everywhere, especially Jack Flanders,* but I won't. Wait a minute...

Akril

*Incidentally, his latest audio adventure that happens to take place in New Orleans has recently come out. more than 20 years (in real time) dealing with voodoo and spirits and he finally visits The Place (not before having a few disturbing dreams about a zombie). All the ambience in the story was recorded on-location. Wish I had a couple sound bytes to show off here. Memorable quote: "Zombies love beignets."

Those are great pictures! I was in New Orleans last week for a conference. My hotel was in the French Quarter and I did a lot of walking around Jackson Square. Didn't get to the other locations though (I was working too much) so it's neat to see your pictures.

Did you go to the Napoleon House? Your conference wasn't by any chance T3 - Jazzing up the Classroom, was it? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

I was meaning to go to the Napoleon House (my guidebook also recommends it as a nice place for a drink), but my company preferred entirely different kinds of bars. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin"> It's a shame, coz I walked past it a couple of times, and not only does it look promising, it's also very different from the way it's shown in the game. It has big French windows that open to the street, and the entrance doorway is on the opposite side of the room.

Fender, if you've already picked up GK1&2, they're definitely worth playing (well, at least 1). They're very highly regarded by most people. I found the first one a bit disappointing when I played it a while ago, but still a solid game. Just be prepared that the story is relatively hackneyed.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Nah, I was working the American College of Cardiology show (I write patient education). Jazzing up the Classroom sounds more fun!

I have never played GK1 all the way through (and it's been years since I stopped in the middle) so I loaded it onto my laptop and started over on the plane on the way there. It definitely enhanced the New Orleans experience (or should that be the other way around?) I thought it was cool that I could identify the cathedrial and Jackson Square by sight, only having seen them in the game!

I am now continuing the game on my home computer... just got through the conclave and headed to Rittersberg. The only thing I didnt like about GK1 is the map thingie...I mean that you just choose the location and you're there...it kinda ruines the sense of adventure...I think it would be more fun to travel the streets of New Orleans yourself.Thats what adventure game means-KQ5 is an EXCELLENT example:
KQ5 is really the classic adventure for many reasons, like the fact that there is no stupid map,you go from screen to screen the entire game.you make your own way from place to place...now THATS a REAL journey in my opinion.

BTW..Just wondering..do u know of other adventure games based on real locations like GK1?

Well, the rest of the GK games are all set in real places. GK2 is really in Munich (a girl on the Sierra/VU boards posted her pics by the Marienplatz in Munich) and GK3 is set in the real-life town of Rennes-le-Chateau (another guy on the boards posted his pics of the chapel and other locations there). As for other places set in a real place, I really don't think so. Then again, I could be wrong.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
Have you ever loved someone so completely that the mere thought of letting them go made the pain too much to bear? Of course, there are a lot of games that are set in real locations, but where the screens aren't anything like any place at those real locations.

Sometimes, real locations will be used for backgrounds, even if the nearby terrain is invented. For instance, in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, the Azores look pretty much like the Azores.

Another game that uses identifiable locations is Ripley's Believe It Or Not! -- The Riddle of Master Lu. *just went to a gaming site*

Apparently, it IS an adventure game! I just caught a screenshot from Quandry reviews and it looks pretty promising. As I was looking, I also came upon a Ripley's Believe It or Not trivia game that was published a couple of years ago by none other than <bum bum buuum!!!> Sierra. Weird.

The adventure game's from 1995, though, and published by an unknown.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
Have you ever loved someone so completely that the mere thought of letting them go made the pain too much to bear? Yeah, The Riddle of Master Lu is an excellent adventure game that remains relatively obscure. I guess this has to do with:

- A frankly bizarre licence tie-in (which is excellently integrated into the game, mind)
- A corny title
- A poor cover

Once you get into playing it, though... Ah, man -- it's so smooth! From the way the screen fades to black and white when you pause the game to the superb integration of FMV with 3D rendered environments, everything about it is classy.

It also has one of the biggest, most elaborate and inventive puzzles I've seen in a graphic adventure: the Danzig basement puzzle. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">
The logical, challenging puzzles are combined with a solid story full of period detail that demonstrate extensive research.

I especially like the way you can pick up exotic stuff in the locations Ripley visits and ship them back to the "Odditorium". It gives you something to do if you're stuck on the puzzles. It's kind of like the minor treasures spread all around Daventry in KQ1, except that in this game they actually have a purpose: when you go back home, how well your museum is doing depends on how much good stuff you've managed to send back.

Anyone who likes Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers should play this game, which is similar in many ways.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

What do you think my chances are of finding it through non-illegal means?
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
Have you ever loved someone so completely that the mere thought of letting them go made the pain too much to bear? Saw that website on Underdogs right after I posted. I'll probably order in to get it delivered sometime in the next couple of weeks, when I get moolah.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
2005

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
Sometimes you have to take the long way home to actually get there.
