King Graham

#1 Post by Swindler2002 » Sat May 19, 2001 3:25 am

I took a look at those new screenshots (they look really very awesome--I was impressed!), and I saw King Graham's graphic looked similar to the King's Quest 5 one. Did you copy his animation right out of the KQ5? It would make sense if you did, to keep the graphics looking similar. Did you make him look younger? No more gray hair?

If I do pursue creating a King's Quest IX on my own with the AGS system, do you mind sharing your character file for Graham? It would be great to start out with a solid animation for the main character and it would cut out time in making him myself.

Just a few thoughts. Thanks! --Ryan

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uswindler2002. ... ler2002 at: 5/18/01 10:26:30 pm

Hey again, Swindler<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> As for graham, we used the real graham right out of the KQ5 game. And sure we'd let you use the collection of animations we have for him. The reason we decided to use the real Graham in our game was because it was a very important aspect of our parody. Like, at the time, we were just making the game for ourselves, so we thought it was funny that we had graham just walking around Daventry, but interacting with everyone in different ways than the original game. It was just the coolness and humor factor that made us decide to use the real Graham. We thought of making our own sprite, and naming him Sir Spam...but, it just didn't have the same appeal<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Anonymous Game Developer #1

Yeah, glad you used the real one! Not doubting your graphics ability, but how do you make a new King Graham when he only looks one way throughout all the games? He wears that red shirt and that goofy, feathered cap <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> For the KQ1VGA remake, you should change his features only slightly to make him look younger. This would give Graham a bit different look that would separate him from his older self in KQ5. Well, as long as you are waiting for the AGS update...

Anywho, will there be facial images for the characters when they speak? Will there be voice support? That might make the download too large though...

E-mail me if you want some voice acting :P --Ryan

From what I have read there would be no voice support for the Kings Quest 1 VGA remake. I am unsure as to other features though.

The good thing about AGS is that you can export character files and reimport import the charcters between AGS games. So yeah we can make the character files available if you want them.

we have already taken measures to make Sir Graham look younger than he did in KQ5, and we do have individual dialog pictures for all of the characters in the game. Although, it's undecided at this stage whether we will include any voices.

Sweet--you've already made him look younger!

You can consider voices as icing on the cake. Is it easy to insert voice support into the game? If so, you could record the voices for the game (or, even better, have fans record voices, leaving little responsibility on you guys, and giving you a broader range of vocal sounds), and put them in later version downloads.

It's easy to put voices into the game, but there's a few issues with voices that would need to be taken into consideration:

1/ The quality of the recording equipment definatley plays a part(no pun intended). If fans performed voices, it's more than likely they'd be using their trusty $5 radio shack computer mic(with built in digital clock), which is designed to deafen everyone within a 5 mile radius whenever the letter P is pronounced into it! Cheap mics mean bad sound quality. And these type of things will be audible during the game. Also, if different people use different quality equipment, you will be able to hear the difference between them.

2/ If we used voices, we would prefer them to be somewhat professional sounding. As much fun as it would be to have fans recording character voices, it's very hard to have voices come out the way we'd want them to sound, without us actually being there to "coach" people on how we'd like them to say the lines.

3/ Professional quality voices and recording quality, really would be the only way to justify the even-larger-than-normal download of a speech version of the game. I don't think most people would download the speech version unless it was really worth listening to(even if the speech pack was optional).

4/ There's always going to be people who would dislike the decisions we'd make for certain characters voices. But I guess that's always the way these things go<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 5/19/01 6:54:49 pm

Can u guys please make Sir Graham normal coloured. He looks like he's been in the sun way too long with that red skin of his. Stupid KQ5 and it's 16 colour sprites. Yuck. And those pants!! Aqua blue??? They need to bee slightly darker.

Oh yeah, do people realise how big audio is??? I would surely not make a game with voices as it would be a waste of time.
Bow Down before... Well, valid points Anony 2, but I think it deserves a trial run... see voice samples from interested individual fans... "cast" the roles as to talent and voice sound... make an estimate on how much room voice would consume. Well, uh, Cardboard Urinal, I give voice more credit than that. Regardless of the size, I believe voice can make a game all the more fun and believable--when it is done properly.

Well, it would sap tons of space from the website to post it for download, so I respect that. I'll add voice support to my own games. I could call upon the actors in my drama class to lend a hand. They would love to do that!

Well, I would say a voice add on is still an option, although we cannot promise this, and it would probably be released after the games had been finished, just so that we could concentrate on getting the games done. We will continue discussing this option, and let everyone know what we've come up with once we have a final decision.

As for the graham character, we tried making him have a more peachy tone of skin, but when he was in the game, it made him look very washed out (which was surprising to me). Perhaps this is why he was kind of orangy in the original game. I also just had to edit a lot of the other characters to make their skin more tan, because they also looked almost ghostlike when walking around in the game. But, some characters are a bit lighter if it fits their charatcer description.
As for the light blue pants, we've decided to keep them that color because it's a really important aspect of the parody! I'm glad you noticed how funny they look though, because I think you'll get a really big kick out of the parody<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> I don't want to go into the whole parody topic though, because I don't want to reveal too much of the storyline<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> But, since the VGA remake was just made as an add on to the parody, I can't justify taking the time to make his pants a different color in every animation when the game is just about completed anyhow. Also, I think a lot of players would get upset if we changed the original Sir Graham. I hope you understand....

Anonymous Game Developer #1

KQIX

#11 Post by Princess Cassima » Tue May 22, 2001 2:00 am

Hey I was looking at your site(awesome graphics by the way--great job!)and i was thinking, there are so many loyal KQ fans out there and we are all so upset that they discontinued it. KQ8 was an enjoyable game, but it had nothing to do with the other ones except that it was set in Daventry! I'm a die-hard KQ fan and I need closure on the series, along with many other people. So I was thinking, maybe if this project goes well, you could make a KQ9? I, and many other fans, would be eternally grateful to you guys! If you could just consider this, I've got tons of great ideas for it. Thank you so much!!! --Cassima

Closure to the Series

#12 Post by Swindler2002 » Tue May 22, 2001 7:31 am

Yeah, I have many ideas myself. Since the games chronical the tale of King Graham, his family, and the kingdom of Daventry, I think the last game needs to have King Graham near the end of his life, like King Edward was so long ago. Maybe he goes on a Gilgamesh pursuit, looking for immortality, only to meet King Edward's ghost and get closure to his life and the continuation of Daventry in the hearts of the player... ahhh...

No, that is a bad idea. Not fun. But I do think he should meet King Edward's ghost somewhere along the way.

Well, I'm going to start a topic in the General Forum that discusses plot possibilities on King's Quest IX. Not that this has anything to do with Royal Quest our the Royal Quest team, just to allow fans to express some of their ideas.
