Amazing

#1 Post by VAL 3000 » Sat Oct 06, 2001 7:41 am

I completed the KQVGA remake, with 158 out of 158 points. Excellent work guys. I noticed that some aspects from KQVGA that were not the same as the 1990 KQI SCI remake. If you decide to upgrade KQVGA to version 3.0, here are some suggestions in which you can improve 3.0:

1. In the 1990 version, the condor tries to pick you up before flying off the screen to the right and then appears from the right again and tries to pick you up. In the KQVGA remake, the condor flies off to the right, but it appears from the left. Also when the condor holds Graham, it looks like that he is standing still. I think he is supposed to kick his legs.

2. Also in the 1990 version, when you enter the woodcutter's house, his wife is laying down in the bed. In the KQVGA remake, his wife is sitting up.

3. In the 1990 version, doing the same action that gets you killed over and over again will produce random death music. In the KQVGA remake, the death music is the same.

4. In the SAVE and RESTORE dialog boxes, an option that allows you to change the save game directory and delete save games would be nice, like in Sierra's SCI games. Also it would be nice if you touch up these dialog boxes so they will look like the dialog boxes in Sierra's games.

5. Why don't you introduce scroll bars in the inventory, so it doesn't go outside the screen if you carry many items.

6. When you did the voice pack, who narrated the intro and ending sequence, and why wasn't narration used throughout the game like KQ5 & KQ6?

7. I still don't understand why you all go by the name of "Anonymous Game Creator(s)", which is listed in the credits. Why have you decided to do this, instead going by your proper names, unlike other game companies.

8. You are remaking KQ2. In the near future, are you going to remake KQ3? The game I like to see is a remake of SQ2, which includes a voice pack featuring the original voices of Roger and Vohaul (I have no idea who they were)

9. Can't wait for Royal Quest and KQ2.

VAL-3000

Well about the voice pack: If all the text in the game would be done by the narrator, the voice pack would be hundreds of megabytes big and a pain to store or download.

Personally, if I'm trying something new I quickly get annoyed if I hear the spoken message "There's nothing to do there, Sir Graham!" over and over again.

I completely agree with that, Erpy! QG5 was the only voice-over game without a narrator.

I can explain the point about the AGD...

You see, KQ1VGA, as you pointed out, closely resembles the KQI put out by Sierra. The thing is that Sierra has copyright priviledges, and doesn't want free copies made. Thus, the game designers decided to remain annonymous to not have a big lawsuit should Sierra get angry.

This may not be the exact reason, but it is involved in legality.
Carrots are Nature's toothbrush; celery, its floss. The Shin Sen Gumi motto: Sin, Swift, Slay.

1 and 2. In the SCI version, the condor also isn't guaranteed to appear every tiem you enter the screen (once you have the mirror and chest), whereas in KQ1VGA it is guaranteed to appear every time. We thought that these things were too trivial to add, and since most of them would also make the game filesize slightly larger, we opted to leave them out.

3. We could change the death music to play randomly..We were going to but didn't think anyone would care. We'll see about doing this one though.

4 and 5. Indeed! Now, if only AGS would allow us to do those things:)

6. Josh Mandel did the Narrator, Graham and the woodcutter's voices. We didn't have narration for every narrator line in the game due to how large the resulting filesize would have been.

7. It's not so much to avoid legal troubles, but rather to prove a point that if we make games anonymously and for free, it proves that we can't be making the games for credit or compensation - but are remaking them because we want to prove to game companies, particularly Sierra, that adventure games are still popular. And if Sierra sees that their own games are still popular, maybe they'll reconsider hiring their old employees and start making their old series' again. And if not, at least Tierra can always remake the classics.

8. I'd like to see those games as well! Who can say what Tierra's future projects might include?:)

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uanonymousgame ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 10/9/01 1:12:11 pm

Thanks for answering my questions. There's one more suggestion I offer: In the opening menu, it would be cool to make the King's Quest logo have a sparkle effect, and the crown to always keep rotating. You don't have to take this suggestion in.

I'm writing a strategy guide for all the KQ games. When I fish this guide, I'll start putting them up on my web site. I done KQ1 and KQ2 so far, and am in the middle of doing KQ3. Perhaps you would be the right person to write an unofficial official KQ1VGA strategy guide, complete with pictures and cool additional info.

Erpy: What do you mean by "unofficial official"?

What sort of additional info could I put in? I already put enough info in the book's introduction about how the KQ series got started.

As for the pictures, I decided against them as they because would make the file size really large than it is now. The only pictures I put in are the game maps that I did in Fireworks. Maybe I can post a poll asking people if they want screenshots in my strategy guide. If enough people say yes, then I'll reconsider. What do you think?

VAL-3000

Well...

Lots of games have an "official" strategy guide. Official means supported (or often) made by the company who released the game. In most cases the walkthrough is only a small part of the entire guide. But because of the status of both Tierra and KQVGA as fan-made, non-commercial (and non-bureaucratic) phenomenans I decided to use the term unofficial as well.

I've seen lots of strategy guides which were crammed with things like a map, interviews with a the designers, retro-checks (points out differences in old/new versions of the game), point lists, description of all objects, description of all game situations, history of the game etc....

Of course, I get carried away easily every now and then.

About your question: I think screenshots would be nice, but then again, I don't know what kind of file-structure your guide has.

My strategy guide consists of seven parts devoted to KQ1 through to KQ7. I didn't include KQ8 because it was an action/RPG like the QFG series.

Each part consists of five chapters. Sequentially, there are general hints, walkthroughs, points list, object lists, and game maps. I added a "general hints" section for people who want hints but don't want the final answer.

I decided that there will be no interviews with Roberta Williams, but a little bit of history about the KQ series is covered in the guide's introduction.

If you want to check out what I've done so far, be sure to e-mail me. gmpetrie@lycos.com

VAL-3000
