My First Time Ever Playing KQ1 - What Did I Think?

#1 Post by Nadine » Wed Apr 03, 2002 3:27 pm

WARNING: there will be spoilers listed.

I've played many Sierra games, and out of King's Quest I've played 5, 6 and 7. Tierra's game would not only allow me to play this game finally, but to see how professionally they created it in VGA! I have seen some screen shots of the original and the Sierra remake, so atleast for those screens I could see the difference. And as far as remaking it goes, GREAT job Tierra!

But how would the actual game be in general and compared to King's Quest 5, 6, 7?

I'm a little disappointed. I mean, if this really was the first ever adventure game, and Sierra would eventually make better games than this, and all their games other companies would be influenced by, than I guess it's hard to start up a new genre.

First, it's just way too short. When I started exploring around, there were many screens and I thought this forest was just the beginning of a HUGE adventure. It was also a bit weird that the screens somehow loop - it made it very hard to memorize locations. I also ofcourse noticed familiar fairy tales. So King's Quest started out as a bunch of existing fairy tales? This game could have been Mixed Up Fairy Tales, or maybe KQ1 inspired the creation of that game later.

There was also a rediculous amount of enemies compared to friendly characters that you could help or just meet. So many times there was another evil character out to kill you just because you're exploring! I guess in the case of the wolf it makes sense, the witch when you're near her house, and maybe even the little gnome who steals from you. But past that it's rediculous. They should have named this game "King's Quest: Death to Sir Graham". Enemies are supposed to be that they kill you if you get too close or take too long to get rid of them, but there were a few enemies like that too.

On the plus side, I really noticed how you can do stupid things to minus your score permanently, or if you kill enemies instead of figuring out another way to get the treasure you get a different sequence to watch and read, and not as much points. This was pretty cool. However a bowl that magically puts stew in itself was a little TOO fantasy like, as I would have liked to find another way to feed that sick woman. But sheesh, they don't much appreciate the cheese or carrot, not even when combined with a golden egg! Further more (though I don't know if I should speak since I only won it once and didn't get all the points), some of the items you find just give you points and serve no other purpose. Unless you can tell me what the egg, walnet, and bag of diamonds are for.

But it's as I said before. It's hard to play this game now and judge it since Sierra themselves already out did themselves through many more games, let alone other companies. But, it was just really short, not enough locations to explore, too fairy tale oriented (instead of more original characters events), and it seems like the dark part of the forest was packed full of creatures who want to kill, steal from, or experiment on Graham. Never the less, it was still fun, I had A LOT of laughs (never thought I could laugh so much at a Kings Quest - this was because of all the forest creatures, and making Graham continue to climb up the tree and fall down), and the basis of what Sierra games are all about was present this early on.

I guess I shouldn't be too hard on Sierra for the negative points. I do tend to be brutally honest sometimes. And congrats to Tierra for such a high quality remake!

Those treasures like the egg, pouch and walnut have two uses.

1) To give you points. Just be careful not to run into the dwarf, because he steals them.

2) To bribe certain creatures. If you forgot the cheese and you killed the goat, you can still beat the game by bribing the rat and the troll.

KQ1 might not seem very impressive at first, but let's not forget this is the first graphical adventure ever and Sierra nor Tierra made changes in the storyline.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

Thanks Nadine,

As for size of the game, I actually think Sierra was smarter to make the smaller sized ones. Notice as the games get bigger, so do the problems with bugs. Also, if they keep making smaller games, you can create many more per year....meaning, we, as players, can have many more unique games to play per year...and also, sequals to the games will come out sooner

Of course, both of us are stating opinions which could be argued either way. Nobody can come up with a perfect answer here...so, all we can really do is continue to make games and try to make the best decisions that we can...

Anonymous Game Developer #1

I have a habit of being brutally honest, and it's hard to judge the first ever graphic adventure without any expectations when you already played newer ones. And also, it being my first time playing the game, I didn't realise you could bribe characters with different objects. This is something I don't see so much in later Sierra adventures, I guess because it's too long and complex to think of alternate ways to accomplish things. But I do know two different ways to win King's Quest 6, or was there three?

And Erpy, I must comment on your little character in every one of your posts. I love it - always changing in both facial expression and clothing! I don't think I've even seen two identical ones, but then again, I am pretty new here, and not registered yet. Very cute! Well, I normally don't like anime, but when it's the basic cute kind like that character, I don't mind.

Actually, Nadine, that anime character is Nash; a mage from the RPG Lunar:Silver Star Story. Each character in that game has several "mood-pictures" which symbolizes the expression and feelings of the character. Nash had a total of 7 different ones, but I created a few more by editing existing ones. (got about 26 of them now, but I hardly ever use the angry, furious or sad versions)
I basically use those pictures as "emoticons"; like the smilies people include in messages sometimes, but more personal.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashg ...

Sigh, I meant animated adventures. Even Mystery house was a "graphical adventure", but those games were mostly text adventures where the text was accompanied by a picture that showed what the text said.

I'd call you a nitpicker if I didn't enjoy correcting others so much myself.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashu ...
