Kings Quest 1 VGA

#1 Post by re » Wed Aug 06, 2003 7:35 am

I can't say "fill" to the woodcutter. So I end up not recieving the Fiddle, then later on I have nothing to give to the gaurds.

To fill...

First you have to actually know what word is written in the bowl. Then you have to use it on yourself to activate it. If you give the woodcutter a full bowl, he'll be happy.

In the original, when you said "fill", you weren't actually saying it to the woodcutter, you were saying it to the bowl. If you look at the bowl in the original, Graham notices that the bottom has the word "Fill" written on it. That's the magic word that fills it up with soup, not what you tell the woodcutter. In the remake, you can get the bowl to "fill" by clicking the empty bowl on Graham at any time.

~Wolfgang

Do you think that the woodcutter knows that the bowl is magic? He seems to be just a bit too excited over a single bowl of stew that's not even enough to feed both him and his wife. Yet, he gives away his most prized possession in exchange for it. Hopefully, he eventually figures it out and never goes hungry again.

"Let me show you what hope you have."

Let's hope he can read. It's not really safe to assume the average country bumpkin is capable of doing so. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

Filling the bowl

#6 Post by fluxmaster » Thu Aug 07, 2003 11:34 pm

If I'm not mistaken, in the original KQ1 I filled the bowl with water in one of the lakes, and the water magically turned into soup. I took the word "FILL" to be an instruction to the player, rather than a magic word. I haven't tried that in the VGA game, but it may work there as well.

Repline Meadow Software

The Fluxmaster

Nope.

In both EGA versions, "fill" worked even if you weren't near water. Furthermore, in the AGI version, it explicitly says that you're saying the word. The idea that the bowl must be filled with water seems rather wide-spread, but I don't see anything in the games that could support this.

Ambiguous interpretation

#8 Post by fluxmaster » Fri Aug 08, 2003 12:18 am

What I probably did was walk up to a lake and type "FILL THE BOWL." The parser saw the word "FILL" and filled the bowl with soup. Since I typed "FILL THE BOWL" and not "SAY FILL," I assumed that Graham was FILLing and not SAYing. The parser does not distinguish between saying something aloud and doing something, so I suppose that if Graham walked up to the troll, and I typed "GIVE DIAMOND," it could be interpreted either as having Graham give the diamond to the troll, or as Graham saying "GIVE DIAMOND" to the troll.

Repline Meadow Software

The Fluxmaster

IIRC, just typing the command FILL was all that was required in the EGA version. That would explain the discrepency if I am right.

"Let me show you what hope you have."
