Just finished KQ1

#1 Post by waltc » Tue Nov 18, 2003 8:51 am

I'd like to thank Tierra for this treat...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> I found the game a big improvement over the original in terms of delivery and presentation; the voice overs were well done and the music was very nice--yet the remake lost none of the original charm and ambience of the Sierra original. I had simply forgotten (if I ever knew) that 320x240 (I liked the letterbox display) could look so good. The scanned artwork for the backgrounds was *exactly* Sierra. Those are about the highest compliments I can make for a remake of this type! (No bugs, either, that I saw.)

That said, your remake of KQ1 was so faithful to the spirit of Sierra that it reminded me of not only the things I liked about Sierra's games, but also of the things I truly grew to dislike about them in their day--intensely...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

(1) I finished the game with 107 out of 158 possible points, which was disappointing, and reminded me of how this was standard fare with Sierra's games of the day--you never could gauge the length of the game by the total points possible. It was disappointing to finish a game even 10-15 years ago with only 2/3 the total possible point score. Memories...

(2) I had forgotten how much I grew to dislike Sierra's penchant for killing you off if you misplaced the movement cursor by a few pixels...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Yep, that's one Sierra conveyance I'm happy live without these days. What a time waster...

(3) To that end, the scene with the Condor reminded me of wasting time. I probably re-entered the scene more than a dozen times and clicked on the condor 2 dozen times at least before I hitched a ride...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> By that time I was swearing profusely. But that's just the kind of thing Sierra served up in those days! No wonder when I finished one of their games I often felt like I had accomplished a great deal...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Last, wasn't the original game completely parser driven? I seem to remember it that way--as well, as far as I recall, the "point & click" interface didn't surface until much later in Sierra's history. I could be wrong about that--but nevertheless I very much appreciate the work you did with the GUI, as I seriously do not think I could have replayed the game using the arrow keys and typing in "look at rock" 100,000 times....<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Ah, I guess I just had a lot more energy in those days...!

Anyway, thanks for the treat--great job and much appreciated. I'm now going to start KQ2 and just from looking at the intro it appears you've done even more work with KQ2, am I right?

Your efforts are most appreciated!

You're right about the parsar originally being in both the original AGI (CGA) and SCI (EGA) versions of King's Quest I. Sierra switched over to the "point & click" interface with the release of King's Quest 5 in 1991.

The Condor gave me the same problems, both in Sierra's version, and in Tierra's remake. Though it was probably easier than actually trying to catch a ride on a REAL condor.

Yep...King's Quest II is bigger, better, tastier, and good for you. And be sure to download the optional music pack <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ... oh yeah, and the voice pack as well. KQ2 should keep you busy for a while.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... forums>Tom Lewandowski at: 11/18/03 3:30 am

About your first point...

Personally, I like when there are optional points. They mean that you could play again and get more, and that there may be better solutions to the puzzles than the ones you found. With games that have very little or no variation in the score upon winning (like KQ5), if you've won once, you've seen everything. So there are two ways to look at the issue.

I agree with the idea that extra points are nice! It's also nice when you beat it the first time with all the points like I did with this remake of KQ1. While I didn't remember the original exactly, I think playing it as a five year old did help me remember for the most part what needed to be done. Also, speaking of misclicks killing you, I recall in either the second or the third King's Quest two times that used to aggrevate me and my grandmother. The first was the dumb cat in the stairway to the basement and the second was the thorn maze on the way to dracula's castle. These are just memories that I have from childhood. Does anybody know which King's Quest these were from?

And again, don't commit thread necromancy.
