Question for Wolfgang Abenteuer (or any German speakers)
In the German translation of King's Quest I, they seem to use an unusual form of "you." The game uses what seems to be the plural form "ihr/euch" but capitalized. Why is that?

Could you give an example? It's often easier to tell such things when they appear in context...
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

Do you mean "Sie"? There's two ways to adress someone in German; you can use "du" or "Sie", just like the French can use "tu" or "Vous". The latter is a more polite, formal form and was deemed more appropriate for a person who is referred to as SIR Graham.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashm ...

No, no nicht das
Er...okay. I guess I should have been more specific.

The German version uses neither "du" nor "Sie" but "Ihr." "Ihr" is commonly used for refer to several people. English has no different word to say you in the plural (though some dialect words like "ya'll" and "youse guys" in the United States and possibly other places come close.) The game uses "Ihr" capitalized as well. I have seen this before but very rarely; it appears to be some kind of "royal you."

Does anyone know what this is?

Re: No, no nicht das
I believe it's the same basic principle as I mentioned in my previous post. A more formal way of adressing. German grammar always troubled me a bit at school, so I can't tell for certain.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Yes, I know what this is. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

It is neither the informal "du" nor the formal "Sie" but as you guessed a form of "royal you". It sounds like plural but addresses only one person, usually one who is paid a lot of respect to (like a Sir). It is not used in everyday language but is appropriate for a fairy tale like KQ. Not something you'd learn at school about German <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

I put a lot of thoughts into this issue when translating KQVGA and when playing the outcome I think it was the best decision to use this outdated form, because it fits into the setting pretty well.

Das Jan
Das Jan

---
www.dasjan.de - www.adventure-treff.de
