clouds

I'm stuck with the clouds. I go 2 screens to the west, but in the middle of the second one I keep falling off. There's a point where I seem to descend a bit in the clouds, but if I try to continue I fall off again, despite the low speed. How on earth (so to speak) do I continue?

You can only stand on the solid land, most of the time. If you got here through the walkway in the cavern, don't try to walk on the clouds, as you'll fall through and die. If you got here by the help of a certain big, green plant, just walking straight west without straying north or south should get you to the point where you can grab hold of it again.
