The hardest puzzle in KQ 1

#1 Post by Sir Nyrhinen » Mon Sep 20, 2004 5:46 pm

What was the hardest puzzle in KQ 1?

I think that the hardest part was that condor thing.

I think I agree, the condor part was hard, especially grabbing it's talons??. Also, the beanstalk wasn't very easy to climb, I fell at least once but it isn't as hard as in the original King's Quest I remake. The tunnels in the mountain which lead to cloudland aren't very easy either, I walked off the boardwalk several times...

hardest

The puzzle I had the most trouble with many years ago when I played the origional Kings Quest was figureing out how to give the three treasures to King Edward at the end. There was only one exact line of text that would do it, if I remember correctly "Bow to the King". I tried "Bow", "Bow King", "Bow to King" and about a million other things and then gave up for a year or so before finally seeing the line "Bow to the King" in a sierra catalog picture.

Parsers can be frustratingly inflexible, but cursor based interfaces sometimes suffer from similair problems (having to click exactly the right pixel for example.)

Y'know, I always believed this was a myth made up by parser fans. I never ran into that problem.

Most games don't have that, but a few do behave that way.

Those games usually have the cursor hotspot marked, though.

The only time I can remember that I ever had trouble with this was in KQVI. Talking to the ferryman the first time at the door of the ferry was a pain. He was very small on screen, he was partially obscured by Alexander, and you had a limited time to do it.

It doesn't happen often but no, in my case it is not an excuse. It doesn't really matter whether the interface is cursor or parser based to me.

Here is an example of a cursor based game being overly picky about where you click: The part where you need to make medicine in Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist.

Agreed. I actually took the answer of that puzzle from a walkthrough when I first played KQ1... :o

And also about the beanstalk. Climbing it in the original remake without getting pissed off is very close to impossible. >:

The mouse is the roughly kidney-shaped object that you use to move the cursor with and is either attached with a cable to your computer, or uses a bluetooth or another wireless system.

You can't beat the game without running into the giant rat, so just keep playing.

The hardest puzzle was the rumplestiltskin puzzle. I'm talking about the very very original puzzle where you actually had to reverse the alphabet. I came to that idea in a very odd way. Cripes, thank goodness THAT was taken out. Otherwise, nothing was that bad.

The Beanstalk or the Moutain paths.

God, that pissed me off so much.

Grahm is supposed to be a knight, and later a king, and yet, he can't seem to walk on a simple path with falling to his death. It just pissing me off about Sierra games sometimes, but in the Space Quest games there was an excuse. Roger was, and is, an idiot. That's why he can never be more then a very lucky janitor. I don't see how Grahmn became a knight if he can't walk without falling off a cliff.
