how do i ge the golden coins without being killed by the elf

i think i need the golden coins to throw in the fountain to distract the merhcant to take the pumpkin but i can not get the coins without being killed can someone help me please
ps how do i get that store in town to open its always closed

As the death message says, there are safer ways to spring a trap than to walk into it. (or didn't you know it was there?) See that rope extending from the ground? That's the trap's vulnerable part.
The store will open after you get the first gem.

Use your sword to cut the rope then get the gold coins
