night time?

I have read every entry and can't find an answer to help me move on.  I have flown the carpet but can't do anything about the snake.  Have been to every screen and nothing more needs to be done.  I have the feather and net, potion, candle, 1st gem, round gold thing, I haven't gotten into the church or grandma's house or enchanter's cave because I can't find it. Please lead me to the next step. I know some things happen at night but what do I need to do for nighttime to come? Thanks in advance.

Night will come a bit later in the story.

You can get by the snake by hypnotizing it.  You have something in your inventory that can accomplish this (look for something you can use as pendulum).
