Can't get the merchant to stand up

I traded for the comb before I had the fools gold, and now when I throw it into the fountain, nothing happens. How can I make him get up!

Talk to him to bring it to his attention.

When I try to talk to him, the message comes up that I do not wish to do business with him anymore. I have even tried offering him other things, but he refuses. I'm afraid I ruined my game!

I am having the same problem.

:ETA: I had saved the game before putting the coins in the fountain, and I just tried it again, and it worked after I talked to the merchant. I guess you sometimes have to try it more than once for it to work.

So, am I giving the pearl to the merchant who had the pumpkin, or am I waiting until the antique shop opens? I still can't get in that shop. I have the flier from outside the Door of Destiny, and I've read the second book from the librarian.
