I did everything up until getting to the church and seeing the circle of cloaks and reading the journal on the alter but when I exit south to go to the graveyard it won't let me walk there...???

Are you playing in a window? Maybe you're not clicking close enough to the southern border of the screen. Try walking down with the cursor keys.
