stuck at swamp

Hi. I was hoping somebody could help me. I've just entered the swamp, and I died. I tried eating the sugar cube and then going in, but I'm still poisoned. I've also tried wearing every thing that could possibly be protective, such as the cloak, ring, and rosary. No dice. I keep dying at the water at the bottom of the screen (which, incidentally, is the only way I apparently can go.) Thanks for any assistance.

Apparently your monitor is too dark, because there is an open path on the bottom left corner of that screen where there is no water.

The sugar cube doesn't protect you from poisonous water. And yeah, most screens (bar the first one) have exits to the north, west, east and south. Most of them are in the middle of the screen, so stay near the middle.
