Some voices (and strange accents), IMHO, didn't fit their parts at all. Yet I thought some of the voices were excellent. And those I found professional were:
baby pumpkin,
The librarian,
King Neptune,
Little Possum,
big Anastasia,
the bad merchant in the town,
the Ghosts in the graveyard,
the priest,
THE DWARF WAS AWESOME,
Little Graham,
Hagatha,
Graham (I can't remember more voices that I like, but there were more for sure.)

SOME VOICES, HOWEVER, were not professional, and, in my opinion, ruined some parts of the game. Like one part I had liked before and now it is destroyed was the story the grandma was telling Grahahm. What's with the strange accent? It didn't fit the story at all. And I found the strange accent of The Count on the Island and the accent of his dead wife to be annoying.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... Play it again, Vildern. I'm sure it will grow on you.

The accent of the vampires and old lady is supposed to mimic that of European. Normally, a vampire should have a romanian type accent, as they are from castle braun in Romania...but, we wanted to go with a more german/russian accent so as it wouldn't be so cliched ,and it would add an extra element of trepidation. In fact, the actress who did the voice of the countess and grandma IS german--can't get anymore authentic than that!!

I had originally imagined different accents in my own mind...but after playing the game a couple of times, I realized that the voice acting was far better than anything I could have imagined in my mind. You just have to get rid of your preditermined notion of how you THINK they should sound...and accept how they really DO sound. Once you see it without judging them against your interpretation, then you'll see them as the original work that they really are...realize that they are pretty damn impressive, and they'll grow on you until you can't imagine any OTHER voice as the vampires.

This is true for any game that has voices which are released after the original version was released. For example, Gabriel Knight 1 and Quest for Glory 4.

Sooo, I highly recommend you play it through again. And if you don't like it again...then play it once more until you do!

Best of luck!

Anonymous Game Developer #1

I did the voices of the Dwarf and the Baby Pumpkin. I'm glad you enjoyed them. I also did the Mamma pumpkin, which you didn't list, but hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad! =D

We thought the accent wouldn't be out of place for a couple of vampires. (like in QFG4) FYI, the Count was based on King Ludwig II of Bavaria. (I'm not certain if AGD1 played Gabriel Knight 2, but she learned about him during her stay in Germany)

Personal taste always plays a big role when voiceovers are judged (more than visual things) and voiceovers always have SOME parts the player needs to get used to. If you're still unhappy with those voices after giving yourself some time to get used to them, you can always set the speech-mode to "text only" in the options menu.

<img src="http://members.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nas ...

I thought the mama pumpkin was a guy for a while. I imagined a mafia-italian accent in my head the first time I played the game. It wasn't till the second time I noticed the baby pumpkin had asked for mama, not papa.

----------
Sponge Factory

The only voice that grated on me was The Father.
It didn't sound deep enough to my liking. Also, and this is only a technical issue, but Graham's voice had an echo-ish distortion that didn't apply to other voices, which hurts the overall quality, to me. Otherwise, though, it's good so far. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

(edit: although since the sound quality in King's Quest V wasn't that good either, I guess it makes for some authenticity. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> )

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... kunaito at: 4/4/03 10:10:42 pm

I think the problem is that I think each voice was recorded separately. I'm not sure they were all recorded in the same place, so the background noise is a bit different for each one.

"May the way of the hero
lead to the Triforce."

That's the main problem when creating a voicepack with contributors from across the net. Every recording has a different amount of background noise, every recording has a different volume level, every recording is done with a different microphone. And all of them need to be adjusted and edited. I could go on and on. Taking all these factors in mind, I think the end result was still pretty impressive.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashm ...

I loved the counts voice and the counts wife was great aswell.
But since this is a criticism thread...
It was a pity that the backround voice was different from time to time but that was inavoidable. I never thought very much about that however... It was only obvious in the conversation with the count and his wife.

All voices fit very well in my opinion. Those that were a little less to my liking was the pegasus.. What's up with the accent? He sounded a bit like Richard Nixon <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">
Also, Possums voice was weird. I think it sounded like a guy had spoken and had the voice pitched up in the computer making it sound a little unnatural.

However, it's only to be expected that not all voices fall in every persons liking. I disliked some that others loved and so on. Just like with the voice casts in the real Sierra games...

Oh I must mention the song! That was great. Very much fitting and in great quality. Hehe, when the ending rolled up I thought "composed and performed by, Enya" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> .

Actually, Possum was AGD1 and the effect was her usual voice mixed with a higher pitched voice at the same time. I think it worked very well. If you listen hard enough you can hear AGD1's real voice behind the child-effect. Quite interesting way to go about doing a child's voice, though.

"Requires MCGA, CGA, VGA, PGA, or TA-RA-RA-BOOMGA!!" -Gary Owens, SQ4

Actually, there weren't any kind of voice effects placed on AGD1's Possum voice. She really performed that voice entirely herself.

As for the pegasus, I tried to make him sound like Sean Connery..but to each his own, I guess!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 4/5/03 6:29:51 pm

I must ask... Why is Anastasia's voice the only one that echos like that?

----------
Sponge Factory

I would of thought because the library she was in had an echo effect but that must not be it because Graham didn't have an echo in his voice when he was in the library and Anastasia still had an echo at the wedding. It's proberly just to add a creepy effect because she was an innocent little girl turned adult vampire.

Yea, it was just an "eerie effect" that we added to Anastasia's voice. It sounds lonely to me...I liked what AGD#2 did with it, anyhow<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

As for Possum, it is true...no filter was added to it. It's a voice my cousin and I developed for a character when we were kids and always wanted to put in an animated cartoon. I thought this would be a good opportunity to finally use the voice. Let me just tell you, I had to drink a LOT of hot teas to sooth my throat and woke up barely able to talk after pulling off that one<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Anonymous Game Developer #1
Tierra Entertainment
http://www.tierragames.com

Am I the only the one who liked Graham's voice? At first I thought it didn't fit him at all but thoughout the game I though Josh was the best decision for Graham. I liked especially when the Count had Graham pinned up against the wall and Josh had to make a strangled sort of voice and it came out nicely.

BTW does Josh ever visit these forums, I'd like for him to see all of Tierra support for him. He is a cool guy, I read his interviews on JA and some others, and it was amazing how he was working on a magazine, or a website, I'm not sure, making walkthoughs and writing reviews for adventure games, and then he becomes a proud member of Sierra.

Josh is THE Graham voice! I will not accept any other Graham voice. Josh is Graham. Overall, I liked the voices, I just have a few nitpicky comments about a few of them. (: I have a bit of an ear for accents, so some stuff jumped out at me.

Josh's voice was a little lower quality than most of the others, but I don't think that could really be helped.

Cedric sounded really muffled.

The Count... well, the best way I can articulate my problem would be to say that it seems like the actor placed more emphasis on the actual accent than on what he was saying. So it sounded a touch forced. It's tough to explain without being in person; as I'd be able to imitate the voice myself that way. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Mama Pumpkin was, in general, amazing. Great work to everyone involved.
_______________
Ian Watson
WolfSpoor

I liked every voice in the game, really I'm so thankful for this remake. I didn't play the original game but I am veryyyy happy that i had opportunity to play this remake, it's my favourite game. I must say that especially I liked the voices of Caldaur and his wife too and i can't forget mentioning voice of the merchant :))

By the way, are you going to remake KQ 3 ? I hope so

You actually managed to revive a thread around the exact date three years ago. You made baby Jesus cry.

Wow, I failed at English looking back at my old posts.

Anyway, King's Quest III is being remade by these dumb talentless guys. And it's almost done too, infact it's gradually going to the very last stage of beta testing.

Maybe my sarcasm meter is turned too low-- but are you serious? Dumb and talentless? I thought they were doing a pretty nice job...
