Question about mages *Spoiler*

Ok, so I'm at the air elemental and in the old EGA version I just had to levitate into the air and wait for the elemental to pass under me and then drop a rock or dirt into the funnel. So I tried doing this, but as soon as I try dropping a rock into the funnel it says that action can't be done while levitating (or something in that line). Help please, tried getting dirt from the potted plant merchant but he won't give me any no matter what I do.
