Training Help

I'm a new player to this series, and ended up in the fighters guild and am in the tutorial. After showing me how to move forward and backward, the lady wants me to practice dodging. As far as I understand, this is the 1 and 3 keys. Since she's stabbing from the right, I'd think I dodge right. So I press 3. But I keep getting speared. I've tried all the other keys too out of desperation, but nothing works. Can someone get me on the right track? Thanks.

Trick is in the timing.

Oh, and another question. The manuals mention easy and difficult settings, but I didn't see one when I started the game. Where is that?

You don't need to choose the difficulty as you start the game; you can adjust it at any time via the control panel.

Okay, and you say the trick is the timing. Can you give me any idea when? Because when I press 3 he doesn't even seem to react.

Make sure you're using the numeric keypad and that numlock is off. Other than that, I don't know what the problem could be.

Well, I'm playing on a laptop. Would that throw things off? I'm on a keypad superimposed on the keyboard.

What you can also do is just redefine the combat keys to something more convenient. There's an option for this in the control panel (click the combat options button).

Okay, so that's done, thanks. One more question. I can't figure out how to buy things from vendors or challenge the blacksmith to arm wrestling. Which key do I use? Talk and use don't seem to lead anywhere.

Mouth on yourself or the money pouch inventory item on them should work.

Use the mouth on yourself when you're next to the vendor you want to buy from, and it's one of the options. A lot of people tend to forget to do this in the later games, which this is emulating. You miss dialogue sometimes by not doing that also.

Meh. People post too fast for me.

I'm using a laptop as well, i cant seem to exit combat so i can adjust the controls, it seems to be just a vicious circle of me not being able to do anything. Is there a way to exit combat with restarting the whole game? i haven't saved yet :(.

Hitting escape should allow you to flee/exit combat.

Unless my escape is key broke, it doesn't appear to exit combat, it only seems to work as an any key.

I'm another laptop user who also got stuck in an eternal loop in the dodge training. Using the up and down arrows worked fine, but no dice on left and right.

The escape key does not escape the tutorial...only actual combat. You could try firing up an actual combat sequence and seeing if the dodge keys work. If you assigned them to the right key, they should certainly work.

If you're stuck in the "endless loop" in the tutorial because your laptop doesn't have a numeric keypad, try this: somewhere on your keyboard there should be "Home", "Page Up", "Page Down", and "End" keys. They should be mapped by default as:

Home: Swing
Page Up: Stab
Page Down: Dodge Right
End: Dodge Dodge Left

Simply press those to get through the tutorial and then redefine the keys after it finishes.

For those of us on Mac laptops: Remember that fn and fn+shift plus an arrow key are how you do PgDn, etc. Some poking at those to figure out what's what and you should be able to finish the tutorial, and either remap the keys, or continue with them the way they are!
