Is there somewhere I can stash my shield to try out some sword + magical combat?

If it's in my room, what should I click on?

there's a chest in the lower right side of the screen. You can either right click it and go through that interface or click the shield in your inventory and click it on the chest, it looks simmilar to the chest in QFG3

What about in Rasier? There doesn't seem to be any place to stash the shield or armor, and I prefer going without the shield (for spells).
