Visit the Adventurer's Guild hall, Uhura will give you a tutorial. You can also train with her as much as you want to get used to the combat system.

As a thief, you can also stealth and get the drop on enemies. Get a dagger or two into them before the fight begins.

During a fight, if you're not directly next to the enemy, Q throws daggers as well.
