It ups the base damage of your attacks. Trust me, it makes enough of a difference to buy if you're a fighter.

EDIT: No doubt it makes a difference if you're a fighter... I literally doubled my effectiveness against scorpions with the sword. Either it's been too long since I played QFG2... or it's been too long since I've played QFG2!
