Thief ropewalking is impossible

#1 Post by ATMachine » Wed Aug 27, 2008 2:37 pm

I can't successfully walk the tightrope even with 200 agility! Damn you AGDI for making the minigames harder. >:

Any tips, or should I give up and ask for a saved game?

Are you using mouse or keyboard? And what actions are you using to get across the rope?

It's difficult yes, but not impossible. I did it succesfully with agility of 127 all three times. Just take patience and a lot of save and reload :-P

I found that I would almost always take my right foot up as I started to lose balance, which was countered by the up arrow, so my path went kinda like this:

1) Push left arrow to take a step.
2) Wait for the right foot to raise.
3) Push up arrow to cancel.
4) Immediately push left to take another step.

Only in a very few cases (like 2 across the rope) did I need to hit the down arrow.

That's probably a coincidence. But whatever works for you. Whatever you do, don't use the hold position-action as anything other than an emergency option...using it too often will make you fall.

I didn't ever use the hold position, but this ended up working for me 3 times in a row.

Sorry about the tone of my earlier post, I've had some time to cool off now.

I'm using the keyboard. I tend to be pushing forward, then leaning alternately left and right.

I found it a little easier when I made sure not to push forward until I knew I was steady. I think pushing forward while you are leaning might make you fall faster. Or not, I have no idea :P.

When I did it I just watched the heroes legs carefully and whenever I adjusted him I pushed forward. The higher you're agility skill the more you can press forward in a row. At the end of the game when you have to walk the tightrope I just kept pressing forward the whole time.

Yes, if you try to step forward while you're tilting, you'll tilt even more. Best thing to do is take a step, wait half a second to see if you lose your balance and then take another step. If you do start tilting, correct with up/down and then quickly step forward again before you lose your balance again. Hold position is a panic button, if you're not a panicky guy.

My agility was about 130 when I did it the three times. My method was quick steps forward going to the rhythm of the music (I'm a drummer, sue me :lol ).

Just up agility (stealth too I think?) until you can tap forward the hell out of it and get through without balancing. I couldnt do the balance as it's too ambiguous on my eyes as to which way the leaning is.

Well, I just finished a Thief playthrough.

I must say, the ropewalk at the end was much different - I had 250 agility (thank you djinni!) and steamrollered over it, just repeatedly hitting forward. Of course it took me several tries before I hit on this technique, but it's really necessary given that the puzzle is timed.

Whose idea was it to add Khaveen in? That was diabolical! (Though it does give him a suitable demise in the Thief ending which was lacking before.)

I love being diabolical every once in a while.

ack Evil Nash! I asked that question too as I hadn't played the older QFG2. Khaveen's addition made that scene much more intense than I could imagine. The thief ending in QFG2VGA is the best QFG ending I've ever seen. QFG1VGA coming close.
