It's been a while and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to beat the air elemental. Is it throwing dirt into it or actually being in the whirl wind? Apparently I am not strong enough to be in it and my throwing is only 76. Any help would be great..

IIRC, you can also drop stuff into the funnel if you have a way of getting above it.

Standing inside it and dropping the dirt works, as does throwing the dirt and levitating over it to drop it in. You do need enough stats to succeed, so you might just have to spend some time training them. You should have time to do that before it destroys the city.

The fastest, cheapest way to improve throwing:

Go to the desert, click HAND on the sand to pick up rocks, then throw them. Do this repeatedly; turn up the game speed if you want.

You need a pot o' dirt - the plant seller will give you some.

Thief uses the rope to fly above the funnel ,drop the dirt in, fighter toughs out the wind [RUN at it] and drops the dirt, spellcaster levitates and drops [iirc]

Fighter method: up your strength, walk into the funnel and drop dirt
Magic User method: cast levitate, and drop dirt into the funnel from above
Thief method: practice throwing and throw dirt into the funnel
