Question about the combat engine

Hi,

I started a magic user and am getting my ass kicked in combat. I'm trying to figure out if it's lag or if I don't yet understand the combat engine. Sometimes, for example, after landing a force bolt, I'll immediately try to cast Zap as the enemy gets up. Sometimes it starts the cast animation, sometimes it doesn't. Another example would be that when I try to avoid enemy projectiles, the button doesn't seem to register. Anyhow, I'd like to know if it's that my character's skill level isn't high enough or I need to time the cast properly. I was able to beat Uhura once I figured out the timings (but it took me like 15 minutes).

Also, as a side note, do the spells take less time to cast as individual spell skill, intelligence, or magical ability go up? I was looking in the manual but it wasn't discussed that in-depth.

If the casting animation has properly finished, you should certainly be able to immediately cast a zap.

As for dodging projectiles...sidestep succes is dependant on your dodging skill. If it's low, your sidesteps sometimes fail. Keep in mind though that even getting hit while doing a failed sidestep still causes you less damage than being hit while standing completely still.

And no, the charge time of spells does not go down as skills go up. When your spell skills go up, you'll do more damage (up to the point of being able to end a battle with 2 or 3 well-placed shots) and as your intelligence goes up, the enemy'll dodge them less often.

Cool. For a second I thought that you remade the combat to be have more of a Street Fighter feel. For example, one of the combos I find myself doing is Dazzle->Force Bolt->Zap->Flame Dart and then melee, or even zap (pre battle)->melee->force bolt->flame dart.

I think I'm going to program my controller to emulate the buttons.

Can you say

I was wondering how long it would be until someone said that. All I can say is we should be very gladd the attack pose for the charged Flame Dart doesn't look like an uppercut or we would have had...

LOL!

I think that the ghoul in particular reminds me the most of fighting games: Subzero from Mortal Kombat, Spinal from Killer Instinct, and (of course) Ryu/Ken from Street Fighter.
