combat questions (magic user)

Hi. I'm a magic user, and I can't figure out how to cast spells in battle. Apparently it's possible, since others on this forum have mentioned doing so, but I just can't figure out how. Could anybody help me, please?

Have you tried reading the user manual that came with the game?
Page 22 or so should help

Just a tip based on my play through as a magic user; before you begin fighting cast zap every time. That way your first strike will almost always knock the enemy back giving you time to back up once and then cast/charge cast fire ball or force bolt. Then keep shooting spells as much as possible until they die or close the distance... if you get cornered don't be afraid to run, potion up and then cast zap again!
Eventually you'll kill bandits in like, two fireballs ^_^
