I can't get the combat controls to work at all. I've reset the controls and tried different combinations of keys but all I can get is backward and forward movement. Since combat was always a big part of the quest series, I'm stuck!

Yes, the num-lock is off. I've even tried resetting the combat keys to letters and I still can't get a swing or stab much less a dodge or parry.

Ah!! Just the tutorial it seems, when I'm in the desert the keypad works just fine. Considering how bad I am at combat though, I don't know that it's really an improvement. Even with the combat assist I've been eaten by a terrorsaurus and crushed by a scorpion. I did manage to kill a brigand. I don't remember the combat being so hard in the old games. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, in the tutorial, you can only do the moves you're asked to do at that moment.

As for battle, in the old battle system, quickly attacking paid off big. The new system forces you to mind your defense more. That said, stay away from scorpions and terrorsauri until your stats are higher...they're not exactly beginner's monsters.
