Original Hero's Quest II logo design
Among the many, many goodies which Andy of SierraVault has so amazingly indexed, there exists this interesting jewel:
The original design for the Hero's Quest II box art, complete with stylized logo fashioned after Arabic script. The text design likely wouldn't have been the same in-game, though, as QG2EGA uses a somewhat blockier font for the introduction's title logo (though the AGDI version restores the fine calligraphy).
If anyone here hasn't visited SierraVault yet, go. Go now. You won't regret it.
PS: This YouTube video is a 1989 Sierra video catalog which features an early look at Hero's Quest 1. Among other things, it has an alternate title graphic (the Hero summons into being the title letters, then disappears in a puff of smoke) and alternate methods of displaying combat (one first-person, but different from the finished game in that you don't see the Hero's backside; the other third-person on a forest screen, much like the QG2EGA Griffin fight).

Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
I always prefered the name "Hero's Quest" to "Quest For Glory".

Yeah, shame the board game had to take it (stupid board game).

Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
I heard a few years after Sierra changed the series name to Quest for Glory, MB gave up the Hero's Quest trademark after all. But by then it was too late to change it back.
Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
If the stories are true then the name change did impact sales of QfG2.
Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
To be precise, the boardgame was called HeroQuest.
Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
Perhaps they did, but I would doubt it. With so many of the quest series, and also a lot more games out there at the time, I could see QfG easily getting eclipsed by something else. That and shiftings within Sierra at the time probably axed a good many qualities that made the Sierra we remember what it was.
Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
I think the name Hero's Quest is lame.
And so do is Police Quest.
And King's Quest.
And Eco Quest.
And maybe even Space Quest, too.
Seriously, MB did a favor to the Coles by forcing them to use a real title, for a change.

Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
I don't think Hero's Quest is a lame name but a change in format was refreshing. Too many Sierra games used the "<INSERT GAME GENRE-SPECIFIC NOUN HERE> Quest" format. Quest for Glory was a nice alternative.

Makes you wonder what the <blank> Quest name would have been for Leisure Suit Larry if they went that route...

I believe Rich Eter now owns the copyright to THAT game title.Schloss Ritter wrote:Makes you wonder what the <blank> Quest name would have been for Leisure Suit Larry if they went that route...

Re: Original Hero's Quest II logo design
I actually thought of that after I posted, but I was actually trying to think of an innocuous title that a (normal, non-porn) retailer would be willing to display on their shelves. Heck, they had a hard enough time getting LSL in the general stores once retailers learned what it was about...eriqchang wrote:I believe Rich Eter now owns the copyright to THAT game title.Schloss Ritter wrote:Makes you wonder what the <blank> Quest name would have been for Leisure Suit Larry if they went that route...

I think that scan came from a Radio Shack catalog. At the time Radio Shack got in the habit of putting out catalogs once a year with the games they knew were coming out in the next year in it. I always wondered if the art came from Sierra or if it was something Radio Shack did on their own.
Either way, I tossed it up.
Glad someone else found it amusing!
