Most FAQs state "Distrub/Kill Griffin" costs you paladin points, but those are 2 completely separate actions.
How many Paladin Points does each of these actions cost you in the original?

According to CyricZ's most excellent series of QFG Walkthroughs...

QFG2 EGA Walkthrough (version 1.2):
Game programmer Corey Cole explained the sure-fire way to become a Paladin in an interview:
...
"You *lose* 10 Paladin Points if you disturb/kill the Griffin. (There is a way to get a Griffin feather without bothering the Griffin.) This was not supposed to have been a total disqualifier, but it effectively is (since you can get at most 34 Paladin Points prior to becoming a Paladin, and losing 10 reduces you to 24 -- below the limit [of 25]). Sorry! If we ever do a remake, we'll reduce the penalty to -5.
...
"That's the definitive word. May you become a true Paladin on your Quest!"
- Corey Cole
And for the QFG2 VGA Walkthrough (version 1.2):
You lose 5 Paladin Points if you disturb/kill the Griffin.
So, it looks like AGDI implemented Corey's reduced penalty.

Just started a new game in the EGA version, went to the Griffin's nest, and threw a rock at him. While you can hug the northern mountains to avoid a confrontation and return to the city, if you venture back out again into the middle of the desert, the Griffin will find and attack you.

Since you will eventually have to go into the desert to find the Dervish and release Al Scruva (or find the Pizza Elemental in the VGA remake), once you disturb the Griffin, you will be forced to fight him -- it appears to be unavoidable. And the only way to survive the Griffin's attacks is to defeat him.

Although...

What happens if you finish all of the desert tasks, THEN disturb the Griffin (and avoid the battle by hugging the northern mountains) right before you travel to Raseir -- never having to venture back out into the desert? I would assume that's when the "disturbing"-only part would likely come into play.

Bottom line: Either way, the FAQs should state that merely DISTURBING the Griffin loses you the points -- as killing him is only for Hero's survival and avoidance of a game over.
