I wonder how this information got passed around in the pre-WWW days. BBS services? Compuserve? I remember knowing this code when I was very young, and I'm not really sure now how I knew it. I guess my friend told me.

I bought a Shareware CD back in the day that contained a cheat utility containing cheat codes on hundreds of games, including this one. I'm also sure it was listed in game magazines, which had cheat sections back in the day when GameFaqs didn't exist yet.
